I need some advice on trans problem I have a 29 ccp that I just swapped the engine and trans in. It wasn't running before the swap. I put the trans into first and second and it growls until I get it into 3rd. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Chad M. |
Re: I need some advice on trans problem Sounds like a case of bad cluster gear bearings.

Re: I need some advice on trans problem Spur gears make some noise, also what oil are you using in the trans? ---it is easy enough to take the top off the trans in the car and look at the gears.
Does it make noise in neutral (does it change when you push the clutch) |
Re: I need some advice on trans problem I suspect your problem is badly worn and pitted teeth on the cluster and two slider gears. When you are in high gear there is not much "gearing" going on. The front slider gear locks the input shaft and the main shaft together so that you are driving straight though the transmission on a one to one ratio. If the front and rear ball bearings are in reasonable shape the transmission is generally quiet. In high gear the cluster gear and the idler gear are just going along for the ride with no load on them.
To correct the problem the transmission should be torn down, inspected and overhauled accordingly. it is also prudent to replace all five bearing when the transmission is apart. Tom Endy |
Re: I need some advice on trans problem I had that same trouble, turns out the shims had fallen out where the housing mates to the block under the throttle bracket. After replacing them all was quiet.

Re: I need some advice on trans problem Like Kurt says, spur gears make some noise. It will never be as quiet as a modern transmission. If its not jumping out of any of the gears, I replace the bearings, cluster gear shaft and the reverse idler shaft. The gears are pretty durable. Usually bearing failure is the death of the model A transmission. With new bearings and shafts it may last a life time. Gear noise is more noticable to the driver when the floor boards and mats are out as in testing.

Re: I need some advice on trans problem When I first bought my 28 the tranny made a lot of noise in neutral, first, and second, but no noise in high gear. It had a couple bad rollers on the bearing between the input and output shafts.

Re: I need some advice on trans problem I am running 600w oil in the trans, and no noise in neutral only when in you put it in gear and let out the clutch does the trans growl. Thanks guys I am in the process of getting the trans out. I will do a inspection on it and let you know the bad and good. Again this is why I love the Barn..

Re: I need some advice on trans problem Have you compared the noise to any other Model A's?
As mentioned, spur gears make noise, and first and second are spur gears in a Model A. Spur gears are straight cut gears. Back in the 80's I knew a guy that removed the timing chain from his Chevy V8 and installed the spur gears to replace the chain and sprockets. The engine sounded like he turned on a siren any time it was running. The only thing he gained was a bunch of noise. |
Re: I need some advice on trans problem whatever was the deal with your trans?
