30 pickup top batting Thanks to this forum Ive been able to pull information and helpful hints and pics for the installation of my 30 pickup top. The only question I cant seem to satisfy is the placement of the cotton batting under the vinyl. I want to take it all the way to where the gutters nail on, is this correct? I just cant find any pics.

Re: 30 pickup top batting Check Vinces site. Seems to me from memory you should taper it down to the gutter line. I did this by pulling it by hand.

Re: 30 pickup top batting Is this an early 30,with the 28-9 style cab? Or,is it a June and up later style, rounded cab.On the later style cabs I used bonded dacron.Very stable, uniform, and best of all,if it gets wet it doesn't hold any water.I ran it right down to the gutters and when I pulled the material down over it it comes out absolutely flat.It absorbs the small imperfections, but using the thin stuff I don't get the puffy look that I try to stay away from.Using the cotton if you get a leak it stays wet for a long time, you get smells from mold and the organics in the cotton. It's a lot more work to get the cotton uniform too.Boat trimmers here have been using it for years because of it's properties in damp environments.I use both the dacron padding and chicken wire in my trucks.I know the wire is not original, but it does eliminate the starved cow look that I've seen appear after a few years on other guys trucks. It has been on one truck now for nearly 20 years and it looks and feels like the day it was installed. That truck has been painted twice since the top was done, both times they took extra care so as not to disturb that top. They felt it was too nicely done to have to replace.

Re: 30 pickup top batting As far as I know, all insert tops on Model A's had cotton batting. Pick ups didn't use the chicken wire. They used a black cloth for the first layer right next to the wood bows, then the cotton, then the long/short grain rubberized material. The rain gutters also had a strip of top material popped into the length of them to hide the nails.

Now comes the fun part. Opted for the metal roof mouldings instead of the spread apart vinyl hidem style strips.
