Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

For my '31, I am considering a new Berg's radiator.
The website says it is $575, but I got an email from Gery yesterday stating it is $696 plus $65 for shipping. Are these 2 different radiators, and if so, which should I get?
I have heard that Berg radiators work great but don't look stock, is that true?
My car is not a show car, but used for touring, so the radiator does not need to look exactly stock, but I don't want it to look out of place either.
Your advice is greatly appreciated; thanks!

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

I would venture a guess that Gery's website is just out of date.

With that said, Brassworks has their correct looking radiator listed for $650 and their Driver-quality / Touring radiator listed for $565.00. Maybe it would be in your best interest to contact Lee at Brassworks to verify prices. Then if you are still interested in a Berg radiator, contact Gery and see if he will price match.

I will tell you that Lee at Brassworks had some real Q/C and public relations issues over the past few years that gave him a real black-eye in the public's view but I think he has come to realize this, and I feel he is sincerely trying to provide a great product with good service now. Now this is not to be construed that Berg's products or service is inferior to Brassworks because that is NOT what I am saying! My point is that I think you could be equally satisfied with either manufacturers product.

I have only seen BERG'S radiator at a MARC Meet. Don't know if he attends all MARC Meets and Hershey. Pat if you plan on going to Hershey or know someone maybe you can save on shipping if you speak to BERG'S for a pickup???? $65.00

I have a 28 and a Bergs round tube here in Australia. Been out on 35c days and works fine. Very happy with my purchase, great service too.

I think the price on Gary's web site is for a radiator core. He now is manufacturing an entire new radiator. I have never heard a complaint about a Berg radiator.

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

According to Berg's website, the core is $400, and a new radiator is $575.
However, as Brent indicated, the website may be out of date, because my email quote from Gery last week was $696 plus $65 shipping from IL to MA.

Thanks again for the helpful replies.
While it appears Berg's radiator fit and performance are great, can someone please share some photos? I've heard they are not at all "stock" in appearance, and the Berg's website does not contain any detailed photos. My car is far from a show car, but it still would be nice to see what they look like before I spend close to $800. Thanks.

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

Snyders and Bratton both list a heavy duty, eight fins per inch radiators for $585 . I use this type radiator on my cars with excellent results. Bratton lists a Brassworks 10 fin per inch radiator for $595 . Bratton shows a 6 fin dimpled fin almost show radiator from Brassworks for $650 . I Figure if it ain't heavy duty and still ain't full show, Why pay a premium ?

If I'm reading the web site right just a core is $400 and a recored radiator is $575.
I assume the $696 is an all new radiator.

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

Another question to ask the sellers when comparing is how many tubes and the size of the tubes

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

I bought a spare Berg's core for my 28-9 about 8 or 9 years ago and it looks totally stock. I will use my original tanks and side straps if I need to use the core.

Use Bergs. Quite happy with my 28-29 recore with original top and bottom tanks. It fits and works!

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

Yes Gery has started manufacturing his own tanks. His prices have increased and as others have stated his website is just out of date. Give him a call and talk with him.

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

With the mention of heavy-duty, should we discuss the efficiency difference between heavy-duty and dimpled-fin?

It depends on which one has the greatest surface area to volume ratio. Dimpling the fins is a means of increasing that ratio.

Re: Which Berg's radiator is recommended?

FYI - According to Gery at Berg's, his new $696 radiator is heavy duty, 3 rows at 10 fins per inch (with heavy louvered fins), heavy brackets, tanks, support bar, and cast red brass hose fittings that are riveting in place and won't come loose over time. The radiators are supposed to be super cooling (85% efficient), and the filler neck is supposed to be tall enough to accomodate any type of cap. Fit is supposed to be very good. He indicated his website is out of date and it will be updated soon.

isn't the filler neck different on repros, in that the originals had a slight narrowing at the base that allows the radiator shell to be shifted slightly to provide adjustment with the attachment brackets? The repros I've had had a completely straight filler neck and once you drop the shell onto it, there is no slop.

These are the pictures of the *NEW* Bergs radiator he has been working hard on. He sent me these as I will be buying one when I can.
