sealing the steering wheel

These %$&^ steering wheels, again not one of Fords better ideas. Has anyone found a good way of sealing these things ?
I clean mine quite often, at least once a week. This morning it rained during our little coffee clutch and I rarely have the top up. As soon as I got in I noticed my hands were as black as coal along with a favorite shirt [ for some strange reason the belly keeps getting bigger]. I wiped down the wheel trying to dry it with a towel to keep from making things worse. The towel is now black, but thats fine as long as no more clothes were ruined. Just had to rant.

I painted mine with some of that Fusion paint but I had filled nicks and things with epoxy. It has held up well for 300 miles so far.

If it was a nice original I might try clearing it.

My steering wheel is a nice original. It doesn't sound like its anything as bad as yours but it does make my hands a little black sometimes. I use a wet-wipe on it periodically to keep it clean, seems to work as good as anything.

Mine always blackens my hands in wet weather. I figure it's deteriorating plastic that's dissolving off.

I think cleaning the wheel well, then spaying on a coat of semi-clear laquer would be the surest way to stop the rubbing off.
I wonder if rubbing in a coat of good car wax would do the trick?

I use a leather steering wheel cover from Wheelskins. They cost more, but look and feel nice. My hands stay clean.

OK, thanks. I was waiting until the body work/paint to re-do the wheel. That rain made a mess of things. I need to do something.

Re: sealing the steering wheel

One quick recommendation for you that seemed to help my 29 steering wheel. Try coating it with a good quality hand lotion - stuff your wife says is expensive. [I think I used Aveena?] The first time will take numerous applications before it stops turning your rags black, but it seems to seal the wheel, especially in humid weather. And...it is easy to reapply if it dries out.
