Rear End Ratio?

How and where is the rear end marked for the gear ratio? Do need to interpolate the code? A friend said that most Model "A" reaends are 3:78 ratio.

Thank

Re: Rear End Ratio?

Rear end ratio's aren't marked on the car anywhere. Never were. The speedometer sometimes has numbers that help but in 80+ years who knows what has been changed on a Model A?

You're friend has a very good chance of being correct. since 3:78 is the prevalent ratio.

If the gear hsg match the rearend gears you may be able to tell. Many things likely have been changed over the years, so that is not an accurate source for that info. Rod

As said, 3.78 is pretty much standard. It could also be 4.11 or 3.54. The 3.27 is kinda new. Easiest way to tell is mark wheel and crank pulley, then give a push[ 3rd] and start counting.

Also real close to the 3.78 is my 1928 with 3.70, which has 10 and 37 teeth, while the 3.78 has 9 and 34 teeth.
