Cross country trip route Hi,
Im thinking of making a cross sountry trip in stock Model A in a few years. I live near Buffalo, ny and would love to take RT 66 or parralell it. Obviously i would be travelling at approx 45 MPH, is route 66 practical? Do any of u travellers have a good cross country model A route u would like to share? tnx Patrick |
Re: Cross country trip route I would contact former MARC President Hugh Smith as he and his wife Loukie made a similar trek in her Model-A Phaeton a few years ago. Their focus was on the Lincoln highway as I recall.
Also, if you are a Facebook regular, several friends from the Early V8 Club are just finishing a cross-country tour. There page is: https://www.facebook.com/EarlyFordV8TourAcrossAmerica I think if you publicize your event with enough advance time, you will have many fans & groupies to help you along the way. . |
Re: Cross country trip route Because of the fragmented state of Route 66 many have chosen the Lincoln Highway instead. Just a thought. Rod

Re: Cross country trip route I'd like to do the same thing, but can't until the estate business is finished. I'd also like to make a small lightweight fold out camping trailer to pull behind my Phaeton.

Re: Cross country trip route I have a single wheel utility trailer that i pull behind my coupe.
its a 1950 Trailcar. i use it when i travel and camp around here locally. real handy. I always thought Rt 66 was the Lincoln HWY, guess i was wrong. I'll have to look into that route. Patrick |

Re: Cross country trip route Route 66 has it's challenges now. I have driven it several times, most recently in 2008. With much of the original road being abandoned in favor of new interstate you have to seek out the original sections. But much of the flavor is there when you get into the towns that were on it originally. My first time on Route 66 was in 1966 in my phaeton. At that time it was still a working highway and you got to visit all the little towns. When I was putting together the Summer Tour for 30 Model As in 2008 I met with the author of the book "The Mother Road". He grew up along Route 66 and wanted to record some of it's history and flavor. You might look for that book, it describes some of the roadside attractions and gives you ways of finding the original road sections.
Hope you make the trip! Remember...."It's the Journey....Not the Destination!" |

Re: Cross country trip route Google "The Yellowstone Trail" . Lots of interesting information. The Trail was founded in 1913 to run from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound. Primarily today's Rt 20 and in NY Rt 5 . Would make a good trip.
