I don't know when they actually went out/stopped production, but around 1979 I bought the last pair available to the Sears warehouse in New England.I wanted four but they could only come up with two.(Sears used Garfield for the A tires)I have some 45 year old Garfields that are doing fine. They may ride a little hard, and the only way to tell if they're flat when sitting is to actually use a guage.I've had piles more trouble with new Firestones than I have ever had with my old Garfields and Riversides.

Re: Garfield tires

The old tires have to have been made with better stuff than today. I have a pair of Garfields that have been on my car since 1971 and they are still fine, no dry cracks. Wish I could find some more of them. By comparison I have a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria with Goodyear tires with a date code from 2011 and when I checked the tire pressure in them I noticed that they are so dry cracked it was scary. I took them off even with lots of tread left. It's hard to find anything made with any care or concern for the consumer any more.

Re: Garfield tires

I just took a set of 21" Garfields off my coupe and put on some Firestone whitewalls. Because they were nylon, I thought they were causing a "bounce" up and down when I drive down the road at 10 MPH or so. After putting the Firestone tires on, I found I still had the bounce. Later found out the set of wheels I have were out of round. So now I have a good set of Garfields I need to find a home for.

Fred,
I may be interested in the set of Garfields you took off your coupe. I need tires for my '29 Tudor but I'm not ready to spend what new tires cost. Maybe we can work something out? If you want to take this off line please e-mail me at [email protected].
Thanks,
Lou

Re: Garfield tires

I could use one or a pair or more of 19" Garfield blackwalls if any one has some lying around to complete a set on a 1931 tudor.

I have one never-been-mounted 21" Garfield available. I had to buy the whole pile of tires to get the 19"s that I needed. Anybody interested call me at 918.851.0675.

My car has Garfield's still on it. They're quite yellowed since my gramps (who had the car before I did) hadn't cleaned them for a while. The spare still has the original sticker on it. The other four on the car have 70% tread left, I gather.

If it's true that they went out of business in c.1980 then the date codes on these indicate that they were made in 1978. Because of the age I'm replacing them, but they're still good enough for a roller.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but thought it was interesting.

Wide White works the best for me to clean my white wall tires.
