Any way to take out Trans. without pulling motor?

Just restored this Model A for the second time in 50 years since I've owned it. I made a huge mistake this time by putting the Transmission gears in backwards. Long story short.... I didn't noticed this problem until after I got the car all back together. Is there any way I can take the Transmission out without taking the motor back out? Thank you!!!!

Unbolt the rear, lower it, and pull it back slightly and you will have enough room to remove it.

Thanks for responding so quickly! I was thinking about doing that, but I was afraid of having to screw around with the rear springs again! Is that going to be a problem?

I started removing stuff from the back end...then I stopped! ...thinking, perhaps I would be getting into more problems(opening another can of worms) so to speak! Is it the same both ways, or is it easier from the rear forward?

Getting the rear out isn't so bad. Pull the 4 nuts holding the Ubolts, remove the brake rods and shock links, then undo the Ujoint housing. Lower the rear and pull it back.

Okay. Thank you jKeesey! I will run all of that by my dad(owner of the car)! I am back in town now to help him this time! I will be in touch! :)

I think it is easier to drop the rear end. I note that you mentioned the rear spring. You want to drop the rear with the spring and shackles intact to the rearend. Take the u bolts loos. Also, dont forget to take the shocks loose.....I've done that before!

Good luck.

When you say gears in backward, no posibility you have the rear end reversed instead? Just a thought.

jKeesey...Will I be able to get the trans. shaft(s) out from the rear without taking the trans. housing off the clutch bell housing? Because the way it looks, the bolts are tightened from inside the clutch housing?

Pull the rear end back, remove the shift tower and unbolt the rear bearing retainer. Pull out the U-joint + main shaft far enough to switch the gears around, then push it back in and replace the brearing retainer bolts + wire. This way, you can leave the transmission and clutch assembly attached to the engine. The only hard part is the bleepin' rear end.

Bill Underwood.....no.... The rear end hasn't been touched since the first restoration. We know for a fact the gears in trans. are opposite of what they should be. Thank you! I appreciate all the input!!!! ....my Dad does too!

ursus.....yeah, you're right(The BLEEPIN' rearend!) ...That's why I got on HERE to ask for different opinions!!!!!! Thanks to all of you, so far!!!!! My Dad's at work right now, but when he gets back home, I will show him this new technology (called the internet) and get him going again!!!! HA HA!!! He's a lifetime member of The Antique Automobile Club/Allegheny Mountain Region....He will appreciate this a lot!!!!...as I do!

How do you know the gears are in backwards? I don't think it would be possible to do that. If you have 3 reverse gears and 1 forward, you need to work with the rear end!

Don't ask me how I know this.

i am trying to understand also what could be in backwards.

what are your symptoms?????????????????

Re: Any way to take out Trans. without pulling motor?

OK, I just looked at a transmission I have with the top off. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to put the cluster in backwards so, you don't need to worry with that. I really don't see how you could get the sliders in reversed but if you did the tranny would be locked up BIG TIME. You will have to remove the tranny and get it on the workbench to fix it. I don't think it could be done in the car without breaking something.

Is the transmission locked up?

Re: Any way to take out Trans. without pulling motor?

The middle gear is the only gear reversed! The forks fit in directly beside each other when done correctly! On mine, the middle gear is between the two forks. That's how I know the middle gear is in backwards! Can it be turned around by going in from the rear, without taking out the motor again? That is my question????https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/data:i...mn1M4fCj//2Q==

can you post a picture????

yes i believe you can go in from the back of the trans, remove the rear bearing retainer housing and slide the mainshaft with the rear bearing attached out the back. the sliders will slide off the front of the shaft as you pull it out. just drop the rear differential assy the spring stays attached to the perches.....
