Distributor points quality ? Can we still purchase DP 104 points. What I see we are getting is poor wear quality on the rub part of points. They wear down fast in some cases. This josh

Re: Distributor points quality ? I have found from talking to others that the wear seems to stop at some point and no more problems IF your cam is smooth and shiney otherwise none will work well.

Re: Distributor points quality ? I bought some quality points from Jim Sinclair (sp.) at the national meet last year. I'm still running old points that came in a swap meet distributor. You need a smooth cam and lubricant to help the life of the rubbing block.

Re: Distributor points quality ? Thank u for replies appreciate Cam is smooth with cam lube Too bad dp104 not available josh

Re: Distributor points quality ? You may want to check with your local Napa store they have points for A's made by I think Eich look like they are of good quality.

Re: Distributor points quality ? Marco did a good post on rubbing block wear with good quality points...he said (from memory) that the surface finish on new repro cams was slightly off but would polish in with some mileage, perhaps 2 or 3 readjustments of road time. Once worn in they will be stable.
He also mentioned that he polished new cams to a high shine to get immediate long life, but did not recommend that for anyone without considerable skill because it was easy to inadvertently reshape the ramps on the cam. |
Re: Distributor points quality ? I polish the cams on mine, and remeasure the lobes to make sure they weren't damaged by the polishing.
After doing so, put in a new set of points, and the rub block has still not worn at all. Supposedly, after installing new points, you have to readjust around the 500 mile mark. Passed that over 1,000 miles ago and points are still exactly .020 and have never been readjusted, not once. Polish those cams! |
Re: Distributor points quality ? I have found that the rubbing blocks are short-lived with most of the modern points I was getting for my '72 Chevy truck - in brands that used to be reliable: Blue Streak, KEM, Filko...
On the other hand, my 1941 De Soto has run over 30,000 miles on the points that were in it when I bought it about 15 years ago. Cleaned and gapped them once. I believe the rubbing block is hard brown fibre or micarta. |

Filko had good quality parts. |
Re: Distributor points quality ? I have had little or no luck with the reproduction original style points. One set lasted only about 100 miles. The wear bar was wearing pretty fast and I had to reset the gap often in the 100 miles. This was with a new cam and lube. I switched to the modern upper plate and points and they have been great, with the same cam.

Re: Distributor points quality ? I never had a problem with the rubbing block wearing at all on the modern points. They always failed with no visable reason.
