Speedometer

Took the Model A out for the first time since winter. While driving passed a police meter sign and said I was doing 26 in a 25 mph zone. My Speedo said I was doing 16. That tells me my speedo is 10 mph off. How do I correct this differance?

Re: Speedometer

you will need another speedo turtle with 2 less teeth on it that the one you now have, usually one tooth up or down equals 5 mph

Re: Speedometer

The "turtle" is located on the torque tube. It's what the lower end of the speedo cable attaches to. Removes with two bolts. Do a search on how to dis-assemble to replace the gear, some one has posted WITH pictures. Gears are available from most vendors.

Re: Speedometer

Hi Tom,

Not being a Model A speedometer expert, if one does a "Search" above, it was mentioned before in: "Calibrate Speedometer" 02/08/13 that the first thing to check on an inaccurate speedometer is the speedometer gear on the drive shaft to see if it is properly controlling the odometer.

For example, first drive an accurately measured few mile distance to see if the odometer is correct -- if it is, leave the drive shaft gear alone -- if it is incorrect, change the gear.

With the correct odometer reading & an incorrect speedometer reading, the next thing to do is make corrections to the speedometer.

Excellent articles, photos, & illustrations in the replies to this 02/08/13 post.

Hope this helps.
