water pumps

I have a Flathead that has the block off plates on the block. Right now it has the pumps in the head. I would like to know if the pumps are designed different that mount to the block with the center outlet heads installed.Thanks. Lyle Hot here in Texas.

I forgot to mention I was told the engine was a 36. Through you folks help I was told it could be a 37 or 38. I would like to see a picture of the 37-38 block mounted water pumps .

37-48 are the same pumps, put on the 37-early 38 heads and the change the pumps and you have a 37 engine. Walt

If you have the block off plates it is a 37 engine. The 36 pumps pull the water through the engine where the 37 to 48 pumps push the water. The stock 36 pumps move 55 gallons each in 5 minutes and Skips modified pumps 92 gallons. The 37 to 48 stock pumps are 65 and Skips 110 gallons. From our experiance and 1,000s of others useing the modified pumps find at least a 20 degree improvement in cooling. With the modified pumps the cooling on your engine will be about the same with either the 36 or the 46 pumps. Attached is a picture of a 37 engine with both the 36 and 46 pumps mounted. This 34 P/U the engine is in hasn't be on the road yet but I doubt there will a big help in cooling. G.M.

Lyle, Based on these pictures of your engine, that you recently posted, you have a '37 or early '38 21 stud Ford FH block. If someone told you that was a '36 engine, they misinformed you. I'm also posting pictures of a pair of '37-'48 water pumps that were recently rebuild by Skip Haney. He did a beautiful and very professional job of rebuilding these pumps for me. He and GM claim they will pump more coolant and cool the engine much better than the stock pump design. These same year pumps will fit your block once you remove the existing block off plates and engine mount/water inlet brackets. You could replace those '32-'36 heads with a set of CI or AL '37 heads with center outlets. I may also have a picture of a stock '37 engine and one showing a '35/'36 engine sitting next to the '37, and if I can find them I will post those here as well.
