oil How many of you put a full 5 quarts of oil in your Model A when you do an oil change?
|
Re: oil I would put the oil level back to where you ran it before you drained it .
On your dip stick . Most engines like 4 qts. with change , 5 will make it leak on most engines . |
Re: oil First time 5 quarts.
Second & subsequent times 4 quarts to 4-1/2 quarts. Always check oil level "before" starting engine, when oil is cold. After engine & oil is warm, oil is sprayed all over; hence oil level will appear about a quart low. This trick was used at all gas stations years ago to sell a quart of oil -- with warm engine, show customer dip stick registering (1) quart low -- however, if engine were to cool down, & oil were to drip back in oil pan, oil level on dip stick would be normal. |
Re: oil With side cover off, has anyone observed how long it takes for the oil tray to drain completely? Probably doesn't hold a LOT of oil that would greatly effect the "stick" reading.

Re: oil I put in a little over 4 qt's on oil ch.... which brings it up to 4 1/2 on my dip stick.
Never to the full mark. |
Re: oil I just changed my oil and put in 4 quarts which brought the level up to halfway between add and full on the dipstick. Just about right to try and avoid leakage at the rear main that might be caused by over filling.
|
Re: oil With the cover off, the maybe 1/4 quart residual behind the dams will drain out in a few hours through the main and camshaft oil tubes.

Re: oil So when i pull my dip stick out i want the oil to be half way between full and low?

make sure you check on level surface |
Re: oil I put a full flow oil filter on my '29 a while back. The motor was not dry but had been run some. Unfortunately I can not remember exactly how much I added, but I think it was around 5 qts., plus a can of STP and some ZDDP additive. For a while the dip stick read high. Now it is right
on the money with only some small leakage. I don't go by mileage on my oil changes. As long as it looks clean (filters are a neat idea!) I keep running it.:) Bob-A:D |
Re: oil As a pilot who always checked my oil levels during the preflight check and soon found out the a Lycoming H2AD engine will leak out the last qt in, and all over the lower front of the plane's hull! So we ran them 1 qt low with no problems. However, The Mod. A engine has a dipper tray which I regard as very important to the engine's proper lubrication. The Lycoming could get you home with only 1 1/2 qts in the crankcase. I wouldn't try that with a Mod.A or any other engine that uses a dipper system. Just my $.02!

Re: oil I'd rather run my banger on a quart an' a half than a Lyc. We have several Continentals, and Lycomings, and they run @ 9-12 qts. We keep 'em @ 10 on the stick. (at 12 you'll blow out that last quart!)

Re: oil I have found if you put in 5 qts eventually 1/2 qt will leak out.
|
Re: oil I like to keep the oil between the full and low mark.
