Oh also how low can you set the idle? I have found out that the lower you set it the easier it is to shift.

Re: how much oil?

a dry oil pan takes 5 qts, An oil change takes 4 qts since 1 stays in the dipper tray. Add 1/2 to 1 qt for your filter depending on the size of the filter. Check the dip stick after re filling the pan but before starting the engine.... that's your full mark. After running the engine with a new filter, the oil level should drop somewhat...re fill to what was the full line and you're good to go.

set the idle as low as it will go and still run smoothly. With the spark at half mast, about 500-600 RPM. A good engine will idle at 50-60 with the spark retarded, but it does not splash as much oil at low rpm, so other than for demonstration, it should be faster than that.

Hi Brendan

I have a filter also & run 6 Qts. some guy's use 4 1/2 to refill,but, I never had a problem with 5...BTW I run 40W,,,I know I'am some kind of nut

I set the idle fast enough so the engine doesn't stall

Does it have a dipstick? That's what I use in all the motors I build and in my modern cars. I don't know why anyone would just dump a set amount of oil in any motor. I guess that's just the difference in a mechanic and a hobbyist.

I was just wondering, because with my 36 pickup the dip is wrong. it I put in 5 qts of oil in it, it will leak all over the floor

So that means all dipsticks are wrong?

Re: how much oil?

The dipstick should measure 6 5/8" from the bottom of the ring to the bottom of the F. Fill to half way between the F and the L if yours measures this. If it leaks there is something else wrong. I just went and measured 3 originals and I have a service bulletin that states this.

Are you saying that the dip stick on the '36 requires 5 qts to read full?

when I put 4 and a half the my dip stick reeds over full. I have a 35 motor in my pickup and the dip stick or the dip stick tube is wrong. it is had to tell what has happened over the years. I know my motor has been dug into at least 3 times since 1935

Think I will fill with the amount of oil the manufacturer calls for rather than depending on a dipstick that could be modified or incorrect for the engine. Guess that makes me a hobbyist.

Your car do what you think is best but the 5 Qts is for when the pan has been dropped 4 qts + or - is for a oil change as some stays in the dippers

I guess it would since you now have a correct measurement to make your stick right.

The 28 style dipsticks are different than a regular dipstick. Check with both.

I measured both,an original bayonet style and a later ring type and both were identical in measurement.
