28/29 Windshield garnish molding, dash & windshield questions

Does anyone know if the windshield garnish moldings for a 28/29 coupe/sedan are the same for a 28/29 closed cab pickup.

Also is the dash panel below the windshield interchangeable?

Are the windshields interchangeable?

Thanks, Neil

Re: 28/29 Windshield garnish molding, dash & windshield questions

The windshield size for 28/31 closed cars and CCPU's are the same size. However there are several differences - cosmetic and functional. If you don't care about originality, the only thing that will create problems between the 28/29 frames and 30/31 frames, are the swing arm brackets riveted to the windshield frame. If originality is important to you, the ends of the wind deflector on the bottom is different between 28/29 and 30/31. In addition 28 windshield frames had different wiper holes than 29 and later frames. CCPU windshield frames are similar (not identical) to 28/29 frames (single cut wind deflector ends), however they have a manual wiper used on them. The wiper uses a small tube riveted to the top of the frame for the wiper to fit through. There have been several threads about windshield frames, if you do a search. I have had a lot of experience with windshield frames and a number of pictures of the different styles. I also have most of the different style windshields. If you need more information, send me an email and I can send you pictures and additional Information.

wrndln, you may be able to answer...

I'm under the impression (looking at pix of windshields for sale on the 'net compared to what I remember) that the 28-29 CC pickup windshield has a longer (deeper into the dash rail) "air deflector" than those found on the other closed vehicles. Can you give a confirmation on that?

And I think I can give a confirmation on the 28-29 CC window garnishes. These are "different" than the other closed cars. They're not reproduced (IIRC) but are similar except in depth (as they wrap around the doorpost) to the other cars.

And I think we discussed the 28-29 CC Dash rails in just the last day or so. They're an identical stamping, but the CC pickup is shorter by up to 3/8" at each end (and the trimming a little different to fit around the door as it closes IIRC.)

Re: 28/29 Windshield garnish molding, dash & windshield questions

Joe,
I do believe that the windshield A pillar garnishes are different than regular closed car garnishes. The easy way I was told and I kind of confirmed it, is that CCPU garnish has a oval or slotted hole for the swing arm studs, where a passenger car garnish has just a round hole. I have an extra pair of CCPU garnishes that are moderately rust pitted that I can take a picture of and post to show what they look like.

I believe you are correct in that the position of the six mounting holes for a closed car dash and a CCPU dash are the same (according to Dan Partain's post a few days ago). I measured the length of a closed car dash and a CCPU dash I have and it appears that if you trim off about 3/8" on each end (the shape of the ends are slightly different between the two dashes) like you stated, a closed car dash could be converted nicely to a CCPU dash. I wonder if Ford had a machine that did the modification to a passenger car dash to make CCPU dashes??

As far as the air deflector, I am not sure the deflector in a CCPU is deeper into the dash than a pasenger car dash. I do believe the ends are a little different. I can check my CCPU windshield frame I have with the passenger car WS frame. I believe a 28/29 passenger car windshield frame has a single cut (unlike the 30/31 double cut ends) slightly beveled end on the air deflector, where as the CCPU air deflector is pretty much at a 90 degree angle. I have never really checked the air deflector on a CCPU as I usually only check to see if the windshield has the small tube for the manual wiper. Today I will dig out the CCPU windshield frame and measure the depth of the air deflector compared to the air deflector in my 28 coupe. I will take a picture of the end of the CCPU WS frame and post it here.

There is a post I made that shows the differences between 28/29 and 30/31 windshield frame for those that care. Note the single angle cut on 28/29 the 28/29 WS frame. The top two pictures are from Marco.

Here is a couple links to what a CCPU WS frame looks like where the manual wiper goes and the ends of the air deflector.

Thank you for that reply Rusty. Interesting the "extension" on the hand crank bearing. This had been cut off on my truck as it had a vacuum wiper mounted on the inside in place of the hand lever. I replaced the vacuum wiper with a 6v JC Whitney electric wiper. (worked much better at high speeds/throttle plate open.)

I took pictures of what I believe are CCPU A pillar garnish pieces. If I am incorrect, someone please let me know what they fit.
