PTO on a Model A?

Hey everyone, curious about the use of a PTO on a Model A, I'd be interested in using one on a doodlebug. Any info and/or experiences with hooking one up and what kind of PTO unit is adaptable would be greatly appreciated! Gotta mow the lawn soon...

You could put an AA 4-speed transmission with a PTO. Requires a couple extra parts to adapt the transmission to an A, but they were an option from Ford, and might still be available somewhere.

The extra parts needed are:

A-7085-E Rear Bearing Retainer
A-7090-C U-Joint Assembly
AA-7095 U-Joint knuckle retainer.

Re: PTO on a Model A?

Ok, did some more research tonight... With the 3-speed trans hooked up to the 2-speed under drive, there was a 4-bolt PTO made to fit on the bottom of the 2-speed. And it sounds like they are hard to find. I also found out that there's a different site with AA forums and that's probably where I should ask this, but I like this site and I'm already here!

Any other ways of hooking up a pto? I guess I could always put a belt drive around one of my rear wheels....

Yes, there was a PTO for the AA 4 speed transmission that mounted on the pass/right side of the transmission gear box. It was used for some of the AA accessories of the time like some dump beds and tow wenches etc.....

I thought there was a PTO for a Model AA on Ebay recently.

I believe the Model AA four speed (Borg Warner Transmission) has the PTO blank on the passenger side as mentioned. Also this blank/connection is an SAE standard: there may be MANY PTO boxes that will fit it.

IIRC there are 6 bolt SAE connections (Like the Model AA) and there are 8 and beyond bolt connections: other than the number of bolts the setup is similar but the larger units are definitely the 6 bolt on steroids. You can search on the internet using search terms 6 bolt SAE PTO and come to MANY brochures and an outline of the standards from different makers. One I picked out was http://www.metaris.com/catalogs/PTO-Catalogue-V3.pdf

Back when I was trying to get an AA truck together for my own use, I found a PTO takeoff at one of the fleamarket/engine shows for $5. It was totally worn out but could have been rebuilt for use.

I built one once used it to run a bush hog, and plow snow. If you look close you can see the pto under the rear axle. can not find a picture of it when it was finished. Used a Model A truck 4 speed with a pto. It also had a 3 point hitch and live hydraulics.

Re: PTO on a Model A?

That looks like a fun build George, can't wait to start my build.

The project I'm getting has a 3-speed tranny and a 2-speed underdrive box, so I'm going to need a 4-bolt PTO if I want to run one on that setup. It bolts onto the underside of the underdrive. I'd really rather not hook up a whole new transmission and just use what I have, so if anyone hears of a 4-bolt for sale, let me know!

I don't guess a wide leather belt running around the "tireless" rear wheel and attached to some rotary device qualifies?

I'm waiting to see this on Duck Dynasty, Moonshiners, or Antique Loggers.

Re: PTO on a Model A?

I have a couple of PTO's. None correct for the AA 4 spd. I have not deternined what the gears are meant to mesh with. Bolt pattern looks to be correct for the AA, but they have double drive gears. I can dig them out later this week if you think they may mesh with the underdrive secondary transmission. Rod

I have a 4 bolt pto for the bottom of the dual high box on the shelf somewhere. I can dig it out and snap you a few pics if you'd like to use them as a reference.

Here are the pics of the 4 bolt pto, along with a diagram for installation with the factory dual high auxiliary drive.

As for rarity, this is the only one I have ever seen and I don't know of anyone else who has one.

I also have a 4 spd trans with a pto on it if you would like some pictures of that too, that also has the factory handles to control it.

Sorry for the huge pics, hopefully this will help.

Re: PTO on a Model A?

Thanks for the pictures. It's a bummer that the corner of the pto is broken but still having the rest of the ear it can be fixed. I'm just about to pull my dual high apart to replace the seals etc... nice to see what the pto looks like.
