Header installation on a '30 Fordor

From all that I have read I am very lucky to have found an original Murray Fordor that has no rust on the body (except the running boards) and only needs the header replaced.
I removed the old header and cleaned the "L" shaped channel that spans across the windshield. While doing this I had to scrape what looked to be tar or something similar from the channel and possibly anti-squeak cloth from the entire width.
I have the Les Andrews mechanics book and he does not state anything about needing either the cloth or any tar/calk. The new header (from Classic) does not fit tight to the steel channel so do I need to use some sort of calk to fill the gap and do I install anti squeak or tape under the header?

Make sure that they match. The wood from suppliers sometimes does not match up. If they match it should just drop in and if not you may need the anti-squek to fill int he gaps. That is the one piece that Dad left in the car as it scared him to much to try and replace it.

My son and I have found that there was friction tape on the metal to wood parts of his header.
