49 F 1 Cowl Vent Seatant

Please tell me what sealant you have had success with for the cowl vent. I tried the gooey black windshield sealant and made a proper mess. Had to remove it, clean it all off of vent , hood, cowl, me and everything I touched. I was reminded of the Tar baby story. Picking up a new gasket tomorrow and want to get it in , hopefully without the mess. Any thoughts on the "dum dum putty"? I think the sealant only needs to be between the gasket and the metal on the cowl as I don't see the need for it around the edges of the vent itself.

3m makes a good sealant in black or yellow. It is messy but take your time and it will come out nice. I did it on my 48 F1

Can anyone tell me which way the gasket is installed, with the narrow sharp lip up (in contact with the vent door) or with the rounded part of the gasket in contact with the door, and the sharp lip sitting in the cowl "trench".

I did sharp lip up. I installed it and then shut the vent for a week to seat the gasket. I then opened it and it stayed put. I also did that to get it to fit properly, as they don't come in the shape they end up in. It just would not stay unless I closed up the vent.

I am wondering if yours is not adjusted properly. When closing the vent should close tight against the rubber and takes some adjusting to get it right. I have done a few and never used sealant and have not had any leaks.

Re: 49 F 1 Cowl Vent Seatant

At first I thought lip side up was right, but I found the bottom side of the gasket tended to squeeze out from under the vent mechanism when its screwed down.

With lip side down, the gasket is on the flat bottom face of the mechanism, and the lip seals on the edge of the channel where it dips down below it. But for it to stay in place the gasket needs to be pushed tight against the mechanism, and then be drilled or punched in the eight screw locations, or glued to the mechanism first before installation.

When installed lip side down, more of the metal is exposed on the top side, and the screw heads are not covered by the gasket.

Still not obvious which way is right !!

You don't normally use any sealant and it installs lip (narrow) side up.

Here's how mine is. It never leaked around town, but at highway speeds, air pressure can force water past it. I am going to check to see that the lever is pulling it down completely.

I used no sealant to the cowl. IMO the problem with leakage is the air pressure that builds at the windshield pushing water between the lid and gasket.

Ross ... Does your gasket have rubber all the way to the screen or does it end at the raised lip. The gasket I received only goes half way and does not cover the bolt heads. When I took my original apart, the rubber completely covered the bolts and went all the way back to the screen

I found this gasket installation link on the web to Dennis Carpenter's site. The pics indicate that the sharp 90 degree lip is down, and the rounded edge is up.

Yes, it goes right up to the screen, and covers the screws.

Ross ... Your gasket is way "beefier" than mine. Where did you get it, and how long ago?
