Re: Help - Ford brake id The front brakes look like 46-48 type
|
Re: Help - Ford brake id Thank you. However, the photo is the rear drum.
|
Re: Help - Ford brake id The drum is 39-41. The backing plate looks like 39-41 also.It appears that someone put front backing plates on the rear.If they were rear there would be e-brake linkage in that assy. Are there E-brake cable tubes on those backing plates?

Re: Help - Ford brake id no parking brake?

Yes, your photo is a REAR drum. It is a 1940 or 1941 REAR drum. That backing plate is also a 1939 thru 1941 REAR backing plate that has had the parking brake pieces removed, as well as removal of the grease guard. This picture shows how it should look. Re: Help - Ford brake id A 1939 DRUM would have the wide-five bolt pattern. Drum is 1940-'41! Look at the LONG guide at 9:00 o'clock on backing plate that parking brake lever moves behind. Front backing plates don't have that LONG guide. FRONT plate would have two short guides like the one at 3:00 o'clock. Parking brake parts have been removed from this 1940-'41 REAR plate. DD

Re: Help - Ford brake id Thank you everyone!

Re: Help - Ford brake id These are 1939-1941 FRONT backing plates. Note both guide clips are short. DD

Re: Help - Ford brake id V8: In your photo of the 39-41 (blue shoes) is one of the brake cylinders on backwards?

Re: Help - Ford brake id Quote:
No, but the shoes are on backwards on the plate on the right...the FRONT, RIGHT plate. As YOU know, BIG end of cylinder to front. LONG shoe to front....Lockheed brakes! DD |

Which or who's instructions did you use? I have an old Motors book that seems to explain it well, but always looking for other resources. I think I also have a copy of Rumbleseat's tips somewhere as well. Will need to do all four of mine. Thank you, Tim |
Re: Help - Ford brake id The innys came first as has been mentioned about the hubs. The outies came later but you can find mixes and matches on the old cars due to preference or expediency.
