Coupe Window Replacement
 

I have a cracked rear window and left quarter window in my 1930 Coupe that I want to replace. Never done it before. Looking to the readership for info, suggestions, etc. before I attempt the operation. If anyone has done this, I would appreciate input. Thanks.

I replaced the quarter window in my '29. Just remove the panels that surround the window molding and then remove the screws that hold the molding in place. Take the window to a glass shop and have them duplicate the glass. I put electrical tape over the edge of the glass and then reversed the order to put everything back. Just don't over tighten the screws so you don't crack the new glass.

My interior is finished so I assume that the interior quarter upholstery panels must be removed to access the window trim panels which have a "nailing edge" around them. Does the glass just set in a channel or is there a rubber weatherstrip? I need to do the rear window also.

The big problem is the rubber gasket that it seats in
all I know of is straight and not molded
Therefore, in the radius, it puckers and does not form well

If your upholstery is reasonably new, it will not be too difficult.

Replaced the quarter windows on an unrestored '31 Coupe about 10-15 years ago and the fragile original fabric and backing board made it a very character-building experience....

All the major suppliers sell some form of "Window Seal" or "Window Setting Rubber." You size it, cut it with a razor, and close the loop with super glue. I warm the seal up before stretching it, and make it just a little tighter than I think I want to. I've had good luck with it.

I also think that there are now preformed seals, but I have no experience with those.

I believe I get the picture now. Just one more question: The "window setting rubber" is a U shaped gasket that fits around the glass piece. Does the window piece then merely sit in some sort of channel inside the outer body panel and held in place by the interior escutcheon panel?

It has been a little while since I replaced that seal, but I seem to remember that there is an inner frame and the rubber is just squeezed between them.

The new glass and rubber just st up against rhe metal of the body. The window garnish holds it in place. You ca use some of the extra channel cut in strips to set the glass level.
