Most if not all made new today doesn´t have the grounding screw...you have too hook up the ground to one of the mounting bolts.

I'm guessing originality is not a issue.

Just got one from NAPA a couple of months ago. It is three lug Echlin but as mentioned the ground is through the mount. Made in USA.

Re: A good quality voltage regulator??

I see old originals on flea-pay now and then. They were rebuildable back in those days. A person would need to find a good auto electric shop to have it tested prior to use. They were also made to be adjusted more easily than any of the new stuff. It's well worth looking around. NOS parts may be out there but I would still have one checked out before trying to use it. The ones with the extra ground terminal are getting harder to find and can get pricey.

Yeah that’s true I have seen some great ones on eBay but the bolt configuration on mine is spread out and most of those don’t use that bolt pattern.

Hi Craig . Could you post a pic of one ? Mine has a spread out bolt pattern to fix to the fire wall. Is what you have the same?

I get my electrical work done by a man in Strasburg, Va, who runs a shop in his garage behind his house, after retiring from a big shop in Winchester, Va. He says that NAPA has good regulators, if you get the best, over $60.00, most likely. Cheaper ones are worthless, according to him. I do as he says and have no problems.

Given the picture you posted, this one might work for you with respect to the mounting holes >

Brillman lists a U.S.A. made voltage regulator also but it too is 3 lug.

I bought a NOS one from Barnfind08 for my 48 here on the barn. I had it tested when having the generator rebuilt. The shop that tested it said it was just fine.

Fred at SO Side O, barnfindo8, is your man for NOS.

Re: A good quality voltage regulator??

The old three pole units had a pretty good buzz to them when they were in operation so they set them up to be mounted with rubber vibration isolator cushions. This meant that they would have to be grounded in a different way so they added a grounding terminal. They used these up into the early 50s but they all went to a straight solid mounting after that. The 1941 Ford cars would have had the 01A-10505-C regulator originally. It could have been replaced by a 51A-10505-A or an 8A-10505-A over the years. All of them are good units.

If a person already has one, they could check into getting in repaired.

Found this in a tray of ignition parts from a swap meet last year. Not so pretty on the outside but the innards look like new. Bottom mounting tab ovals measure 4 1/4 inches across at their outside if that makes sense. Let me know if needed.

Re: A good quality voltage regulator??

B5 indicates that to be designed during the 1955 model year. It was likely the last of the 6-volt types. 1956 is when they went to 12-volts. The amperage rating is important too. Most of the old 3-pole type were 33 amp max.

Just to add: I looked and the Echlin Catalog and they list the VR401 as the replacement for a lot of the 3-pole 6-volt system regulators that Ford and some other manufacturers can use. Echlin used to be a good quality outfit but I can't vouch for them since they were bought out by Standard Motor Parts. The VR401 uses light blue for the cover. Here is a NAPA link.
