split pins usage Clem with another dumb Q.
Are there places where the split pins are used for other than holding something on? Like thrust support or end of travel pin? Meaning why do split pins need to be so thick? |
Re: split pins usage Some folks call cotter pins "split pins".
Are you referring to a "roll pin"? |
Re: split pins usage no: Cotter pins

Usually there is a washer involved to protect wear and tear. If you are experiencing difficulty removing them from your axle shaft pick up a tool catalog and find a cotter pin puller. It's like an ice pick that got slammed in a door jamb. With the extra pointy end, one can catch the eyelet and leverage the bent b#**#*d right out of its hole. For axles and spindles I always look for the longer ones. Easier to spread open, just cut away what you like. Disclaimer: The best though is not having arthritis. ( Sorry Ryan ) |

That's a great description right there. Mart. |
Re: split pins usage If you are sizing a cotter pin for a high vibration/movement area like a rod nut, make sure the pin fits tight. If loose it can wear and come apart.

Re: split pins usage Keeping the drip hole in the early Ford v-8 oil pan was a good use for a split pin.
