36 coupe door handle..

Can I just take out the two exterior screws and remove the door handle?? Will it go back in without removing the inside panel? For some reason it has allowed the handle to go in and touch the paint on the door thereby creating the first chip in my beautiful paint job..So as soon as I stop crying I want to find why this happened..They were all new when car was restored ..Thanks in advance..

Yes just remove two screws, , turn handle down slightly and pull, a little up/down movement and it will come out.
Same going back in, when you have the handle out you will see why.

Re: 36 coupe door handle..

I would make a guess that the latch assembly inside of the door has a broken and/or missing spring. It is also possible the the spring on the inside handle is missing or broken.
The handle will come out just as RalphM stated.

While you are turning the handle down, apply pressure on the latch bar against the spring tension. Same on install or else the handle shaft may not want to go into the latch.

Did you get the broken piece out? Was it an original handle or a repo. Just curious

They were or are repro as I got them with the package when I bought it years ago..Very nice chrome but not vey strong on the inside part..By the way abot 3 or 4 pieces fell out when I pulled out th handle..Looks like white metal cast to me

I’d rather have a dented original, than a shiny repop.

Decent originals or NOS handles can be found and probably price wise are close to the repos.

I try my best to avoid aftermarket trim parts.. As it was said, an original part that has a dent is better than any re-pops.
Do you have an early car, handle that is T shaped, or a late car that has the more rounded handle?

Don't forget the waterproof paper pad between the outer door surface and the escutcheon of the door handle when you install the replacement handle.

Never knew there was paper there. Is this commercially available or do you just make them yourself?

If the handle drooped before, it's the spring. You can order springs and replace. Really the only thing that is cosmetically bad about the mechanical latches (still operates fine). The mechanism is super simple and unless it's left buried 2 ft underground for 40 yrs they will work great. Even then it might be fine.

As said, you have to turn the handle 45 degrees before it'll come out (with the two outside screws removed). It makes more sense when you look at the mechanism as a whole.

Macs has the "gaskets" as others (dennis, etc). Theoretically you can make them with some gasket material and an exacto blade.

Barbed Fuel fittings, that we all have laying around from kits, do I nice job of punching holes in gaskets.

Assuming you have the outer echelons. Sorry about the paint, but I hope it's still a fun project!
