Rear Fender Welt

I am ready to install the rear fenders on my 1930 tudor sedan. I have never installed a welt before. What is the best way to install the welt? How far does the welt go down the rear of the fender? Do I install in one continuous piece? Do I attach it to the fender some how first? Does the welt also go between the running board and the fender?

the welting is one continuous piece, it goes all the way down to the bottom of the body in the rear. NO on the running board but it does go on the splash apron down pass the running board in the front. mount the fender on the body leaving out the bolts for the splash apron and running board, leave the upper nuts loose, now start installing the welting. you have to cut some relieves in the welting along the welding when you work it in.

Some folks sew some strings on the bottom edge so that is can be pulled around to hold it in the groove while tightening everything up. Ford used Pyroxylin (lacquer) coated cloth welting painted prior to installation on the fenders I believe. Cowl welt was painted body color. Most of the new stuff is likely vinyl.

Re: Rear Fender Welt

I recently did mine with a series of V cuts to clear the bolts and to account for the curvature of the fenders. I lucked out and the fenders, when they were not tightened down, were loose enough that I could get the welting in and have it stay in place as I was tightening the fenders uip.

I originally tried punching 1/2" holes for the bolts, but I soon gave up on that in order to get best fitment on the welting. I "Veed" out the punches to be V-shaped notches. In the end result they are all behind the fender lip so nobody sees the "V's" any way.

The good news is that the process is not so permanent that if you are off a little bit, you can loosen it all up again and start over.

In the crevice between the top of the splash apron and the lower body. the welt is supposed to tuck into that space. I worked at getting the tuck to work right. Mine is a '29 Tudor, so I think in that area, it will be the same as a '30. And for mine, there is not supposed to be welting between the forward edge surface of the fender and the rear edge of the running board.

By the way, I did some copious searches of this forum and looked over the RG&JS pretty well to get the answers as to where it runs, etc.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions. What a great group with the same interest as mine.
