Recently took a trip in 39 Coupe up around top of South Island, with a friend.
Went over the Takahs hill and met a guy who invited us to view his long term project Fords. Can you ID them. driving around in these old cars always someone with a story to tell such as these car and their owner.Attachment 440908

The hill over from Motueka to Golden Bay area, Takaka hill is a good test for the Fords, long and rather high pulls.

You're right but dare I pass this on The gentleman concerned is extremely well know in Ford Flathead circles. He still has his original 35 Coupe race car No22 which he has owned as a boy at 16, age now around 4 score years.

First car is a 40 Merc. You can tell by roof line, hood and grille.

The V8s are relatively easy to ID. Anyone want to back me up on the panel truck with semaphores on the far side of the '38 Standard? I think it's a Commer.Maybe a Thames. I dunno! I could be wrong... Bill

The black Merc sedan is a '39. Hood trim, grill and nose of hood's "beak" shape are the big give-aways. Note "wide-five" wheel, and NO wing-vent in front window. Those headlight doors are the cheap-ass aftermarket sealed-beam "upgrade" units that make most of us cringe....stock '39s still had bulb & reflector like a Ford. A true '40 Merc is in the pic below. DD

IF you are talking about the "First" picture with the black 4 door sedan, IT's a 39 as JSEERY accurately posted. For SOME unknown reason (IMO) they put sealed beam headlights in it which to me look terrible (Well SHIT really)!!!

They were made by an outfit called "Electroline" in the '40s. The pic below shows their ONLY marginally-acceptable use, though! DD

At least the one you pictured has the a "little" more interest with the "Parking" light addition below the main head light BUT as you say STILL look better as a clock!!!

There were obviously several different iterations of these ugly SOBs. I'm not even sure that they were all Electroline-brand by name. There was just no comparison for Henry's gorgeous 1940 rendition. DD

Good thread, I'll play.

I'm not the first to identify Pic #3 is a 1935.

It's a convertible. Do I see a rumble seat or a laid-in-place trunk lid, but in any case a Cabriolet or Roadster, not a four door?

If we could peek under the blanket covering the windshield it would reveal if it's a Roadster with those gorgeous chromed stanchions or a Cabriolet with the body color surround.

We can't see enough of the inside of the open door for a window winding handle to show.

Blowing the picture up, there is the faintest hint, just about two pixels, that could be the chromed side-curtain support rod socket on the top of the open door, but I'm probably seeing things on this.

The tail light stands, while pointing oddly from this photo, are interesting.

In the case of rumble seat cars, there will be a step-pad on the non-filler tail light stand. The license plate bracket is hiding that part of the stand in this photo.

Don't left drive cars typically have a left side longer tail light stand with the gas filler coming out the top, and the right side short one with no gas filler hole?

This car, being right drive (assumption) has the 1935 short tail light stand, but with the gas filler hole in it, on the off side'. I'm guessing this is because there was one gas tank for all '35 cars, even if the filler didn't end up coming out on the 'driver' side of RHD cars. Something I had not previously grasped about RHD cars.

There are a lot more 1935 tail light stands than you'd think. FordBarn also taught us there are a bunch of spare tire mounts too!

These cars have been asleep for a long time and will continue to do so as per conversation with owner. The pickup is just awaiting a king pin job but this is not running a flathead.
The one under cover has been through a few hands and presently may never see the light of day. As per the coverings and stuff on it. It seems its a 35 roadster from ownership of a current member of our local " Ford Coupe Club". It passed to present owner some 20 plus years ago. But the hospitality extended from this guy and partner to us both was great and another good Ford experience and another friend made.
Such a good hobby to partake in.

35 tail light stands. My RHD coupe has the filler in the LH stand and 2 rumble seat steps on the LH fender. Both stands are equal length.
