New generator field coils

2 Attachment(s)
Greetings all,
Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any answers by searching through the forums.
I am rebuilding a 1930 generator but "The Model A Generator Book" that I have been referring to doesn't show very clearly where the two wires from the field coils go. There is one wire without a lug on it - where does that go? Then the second wire with a lug on it, where does that go?

I have included some pictures that might help.
As always, your learned advice is most welcome!

Re: New generator field coils

The wire with no terminal end attaches to the generator case, there is a small countersunk screw through the side of the case. The red wire attaches to the 3rd brush (movable one).

Hi Ryan, this generator casing has no holes other than the ones for the cutout switch and the mounting bracket underneath. Any suggestions for me please?

Re: New generator field coils

I drilled and tapped a hole in the casing to connect the wire .

Thanks Purdy - begs the question: why was there no hole to start with?

Interesting but yep I see yours doesn't have that hole, it should be close to the 4 big access holes. All of the generators I've had my hands in have had a hole for that screw. If that's an aftermarket thing how were they done originally?

Maybe the casing is from a - HEAVEN FORBID - "Chevy"?

Re: New generator field coils

Some of the generators grounded to the case , just under the hole in the generator housing that the post that connects to the cut out hooks up to .

Re: New generator field coils

The wire that grounded under the post had a lug with a large hole .

Re: New generator field coils

Not all generator cases had a hole and screw mount for the grounded end of the wire. There would have been a large holed lug attached that went between the insulator's and case at the output screw. When replacing the field coils many just drill and counter sink a hole to install the grounded end wire. The counter sink being on the outside.
