How do estimate the price a rare ( I think) part?
 

Eventually, I'll be selling some '34 parts for a friend of mine.One of the parts is a tail light stand for a '34 sedan delivery.I know these cars are very rare and I believe the tail light stands are rare as well.Would anyone care to give me a ballpark figure as to what it's worth? I'm not trying to make a killing...just looking for a fair price. Thanks.

Don't know if you are into EBAY but a search there for parts for sale and sold parts will give an idea what parts are being sold for and asking prices.

Thanks 51,but I tried that and no luck.I think sedan delivery stands are unlike coupes,cabriolets etc.

If several passenger car stands are found and are similarly priced, that would indicate a low ball starting point. Then again, research the actual part number, as it may also have been used in common applications. Either way, I doubt that you have a golden egg there.

Also, remember that rare does not necessarily equate to valuable.

Thanks for the input guys. I did a little research and found that the tail light stands for a delivery mount to the body and not the fender. Odd huh?

Very true, the sedan delivery tail light stand is unique. Very rare. However some one reproduces them in a cast bronze stand. These would determine the value. You might ask Carl Wescott who makes the bronze stands.

Drake has '35-'41's listed in his catalog.$125-$165.

Not odd, but necessary to provide clearance for the rear door.

Probably harder to find is the cast part that backs up the bracket on the inside of the sheet metal corner. I was lucky in the 34 sd I used to have still had those even though the body was seriously trashed.

Many years ago these were listed in Hemmings by a person from Southern California (his name escapes me). My understanding is he passed and no one picked up his patterns. Windsor Fabrications of Battle Creek Michigan (Harold E???) may also have made them in cast iron. The problem with these were that they were cast solid and you had to run the wire external.


We do make the 1935-39 and 1940-41 versions, cast bronze, hollow (early runs of the 1935-39 were aluminum). Drake sells these.


As to demand, I have had inquiries for these maybe 6 times in the last 30 years. This is likely one of those parts where the extreme rarity of the part is exceeded only by the more extreme rarity of need.

Only a purist would care. If he/she's listening. Takes up little room on the shelf, maybe put it there for 50yrs and let someone else throw it away.

If it helps any at all we stock them NOS at $145 each.

They are similar to a part I am hunting, a 33/34 station wagon mirror bracket, rare but a very limited market.

I once had a NOS LR fender for a 34 one ton panel delivery that someone gave me. That is a very very rare panel and the chances were slim that I’d ever find someone that needed it. Low and behold a guy in Kentucky had one missing a LR Fender. I gave it to him and was thrilled to see it get used by the one person in the world needing it

Good on ya Mike. When we bought our 35 sedan delivery we "should" have got the spare rear door offered at time of sale for $800 extra.....could have saved the guy who paid $2500 for it some serious $$$$$. My regret BUT so happy to see you're philanthropic spirit and dedication!!!! To me, that's what keeps this hobby alive NOT the "profit" line!!!
