Starter problem
 

I have never had this before.
I was bumping the starter from under the hood .
it stuck and kept turning over until I tap the switch
changed the switch to a new one .
still does it.
looked like knob had some spot on it so I sanded the
brass colored knob and still does it.
the switch is sticking to the knob until I tap switch.
what is this?

Is the starter pedal shaft binding either in the switch housing or the floor??

I tried pulling back on the shaft from inside and outside
didn't stop until I taped on switch.

the starter spring is sticking to the knob
but why. must be room to release because when taped it lets go.
why would it stick?

Using a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt starter, or a low 6 volt battery can cause this problem. Also make sure the insulator inside the switch cover is flat and lays tight to the side, so the bronze strap has good clearance. Does the plunger have good return strength before it's installed?

I would first remove the switch and check for bind of the bronze strip as Tom says. Sometimes the bottom nut at the cable terminal gets loose and causes the bronze strip not to have enough tension and spring. You can remove the inner strip and bend it upward to give more spring back. Some of the repro strips are copper instead of brass-bronze and lack spring like a brass strip has and will stick to the starter contact. As for twelve volts I have run model A starters on 12 volts for many years and never had one to stick. I'm kinda leaning in the direction that your switch has the wrong strip made of copper instead of brass

I just thought of another possibility. Maybe when someone tightened the second nut, for the battery cable, they twisted the stud and first nut and caused the contact strap to rub on the side of the insulation. Center the strap and have the first nut good and tight before you install the switch, then hold the battery cable tight while you tighten the second nut, so the stud and contact strap don't move.
