31 front pully removal replace hey guys do I need a special socket or anything for the pully nut? also can I pull this straight out without takeing the oilpan and cover off?

Re: 31 front pully removal replace You can replace it without dropping the pan. The cover has to come off. Put new seals in. I did it last year.

Re: 31 front pully removal replace The ratchet nut takes a 1⅜" socket. I use a bent up Box End Wrench.

Re: 31 front pully removal replace With the cover off, the top is easy. You grind a 45 deg angle on about 180 deg of the collar of the pully that passes under the seal. This will let you slide the pully past the lower seal using the chamfer as a wedge to get past the lower seal. Not easy, but it will go.

Re: 31 front pully removal replace for the nut my sockets wouldnt get in there. i used wrench on the nut at 90 degree and put a large crecent wrench on the fist wrench. the first wrench biting the bolt and the second wrench biting the first wrench as close to pully as possible. IF my fuzzy memorys serve me today.

Re: 31 front pully removal replace When replacing my pulley/ratchet nut had to do this.
Get the wrench handle up against a frame member, ignition off, bump the starter. Can not remember if I had to take the motor splash pan off. Only a momentary bump on the starter to reduce the chances the wrench could go flying and cause damage. Details of this old mechanics trick: Ignition key off, additionally pull fuse or coil wire for safety. Put wrench on nut, put in 3rd gear, push car forward until wrench is seated against frame. Set hand/e brake, shift into neutral, bump starter Nut should be freed so you can wrench or use your had to completely remove. Remember to hook up fuse coil wire when done. |
Re: 31 front pully removal replace Use the bent box end tool as pictured in post #3. They aren't that expensive.
Rest the handle on the frame on the DRIVERS side. Tap the starter as mentioned with ignition off. Just a quick tap. |

Re: 31 front pully removal replace I just had to buy a 1 3/8" socket to put on the pulley. It is not a standard one so I had to go to the extra. It is one of those Kiwi ones with harminic balancer built in. The socket was the only way but they only come in 3/4" drive and I have only 1/2" tools. To make an adaptor, I cut 2 pieces on 3mm sheet anout 3/4" X 1/2", bent them at right angles and stuffed them in as packing so I could use the 1/2 drive breaker bar. Got it plenty tight enough!
The socket only cost me about $A10.50 ($US7.35) and now that I have it, I'll never wear it out. Maybe an option for our OP. |

Also had the issue of getting a socket and ratchet handle or breaker bar in with out taking other things off. Found a deep enough socket, but could not get it on the nut with the handle or breaker attached, and not enough room to put the socket on and then put the ratchet handle or breaker on the socket. Got lucky and had a long handle box end wrench that fit. Clamped the wrench in a vice between 2 pieces of wood, and used a propane torch to bend the handle up like what is in the picture in this string. |
Re: 31 front pully removal replace I'm ticked off, I just had the pan off to replace gasgets hasn't even run yet since its back together. didn't relize you have to do this to get pully off. that's why I ask the pully wont come out without takeing the cover off?

Guess I misunderstood again, I was thinking about replacement of the hand crank/pulley nut, have not taken the pulley off, would not have an answer to if the oil pan must be removed to remove the pulley. |

Sorry for the multiple posts. Just as an FYI, I believe some convert to a 2 piece pulley so the pulley can be removed easily. You may want to research the Barn about this, mostly likely has been covered in depth previously. See what the pluses and minus are. The conversion was recently highly recommended to me by the shop that is currently having my motor rebuilt. Decided to have the conversion done, did not ask if there are any downsides to a 2 piece pulley though, forgot to ask. |
Re: 31 front pully removal replace mine has the original pully on it. it is bent out of round somehow before I owned it. motor is still in car. I just had the pan off to replace gargets and try to stop a leak. I didn't relize you couldn't take the pully off without takeing the pan and or timeing cover off. what I'm asking is can I not pull the pully straight out without takeing pan off and or timeing cover?

Re: 31 front pully removal replace Post 2 and 5 seem to indicate that the timing cover has to be removed, so I assume you are looking for second opinions, perhaps an alternate way? If yes I can not help, and others will respond it is the only way or have an alternate method.

The short answer (I believe) is yes it can be removed from the engine without removing the pan or the timing gear cover. Getting it back in without removing the timing cover and or dropping the pan away from the block I don't know as I have not done this to an engine while it is in the car. Loosening the rear motor mount bolts, removing the throttle assembly before lifting the front of the engine is a part of the process. Others that have done this can provide more detailed instructions I'm sure. |
