55 Crown Vic

Doing a complete drive-train change. Anyone know if the motor(272) and tranny (Fordomatic) can be lifted out together? Or do I do as the shop manual suggests and pull them separately?
Also need to know what motor mounts to use for 302? and what tranny mounts to use for an AOD?

Pretty sure if you try to pull the engine first you have to support the transmission, it only has one mounting point, on the tail shaft.

Not sure how well equipped your workspace is or how much cutting & fabrication work you'll have to do but, taking the front clip off the car first might ??? be an option.

Someone who's done this before will chime in I'm sure.

Butch's Cool Stuff sells a mount kit but you'll have to modify the trans mount for the AOD per the site.

This kit is for Ford original V8 cars ONLY. See kit #2510-CP if your car was an orig 6-Cyl car or is a Wagon or Sedan Delivery. Bolts in any SB Ford V8 (289-302-351W with C-4, 3spd or 4spd. Other trannys with some modification). Super Good Fit

It can come out as one, but you would either have to drop the trans x-mbr and possibly the cooling module (core supt) ot use on on those fancy store bought carb pad swivels.

For my 54, I pulled the engine and trans together. Put in back together that way too. Yes, you have to drop the rear mount crossmember. I can't really understand the manual saying pull them separate, unless only the engine is being worked on.

I can't address a passenger car, but I've pulled yblocks with fordo's and T-85 O/D's as a unit before. Make sure the engine picker is a good one, they are not light. Careful wheel alignment on the hoist and an adjustable plate like K mentions is a big help. Another set of hands is well worth having a half case around, too.

I was lucky, Dad always had access to equipment to pull big block from 2 ton trucks, so they were plenty strong and had good reach. You may need to get the car up a bit on jack stands also for clearance when you tilt the assembly.

[email protected] Guys that have used their 52-53 kit have found out the hard way Butch needs to update his info I even emailed them pictures to show AOD's line up with the factory cross member,it is the C4 that requires an extension plate. Notice dimension "C" the C4 is 2" further towards the front. http://non-stoptransmission.com/en/info-ford.php

I have helped a lot of guys over the years with 302 & AOD swaps, pass on the Butch's kit I like theirs for 1952-53 cars but for 1954-59's this is far better and the parts are all over the counter you'll like the $100 you'll save too.Pictures and part numbers are here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-mounts.41498/ Be sure to read the first comment below the pictures,so you turn these mounts so the 302 & AOD are closer to the firewall. That also helps with radiator clearance.

As you can see the AOD sits right on the stock cross member you may have to redrill the mount holes. Also you can use Hedman 88400 headers with zero modifications and they clear the steering box well.

Well I did get them out as one unit, removing the A/C condenser and the front grill. I used a vinyl coated aircraft cable under & through the intake manifold up to the shop crane. Worked great. Thanks for all who commented.
