55 Crown Vic Doing a complete drive-train change. Anyone know if the motor(272) and tranny (Fordomatic) can be lifted out together? Or do I do as the shop manual suggests and pull them separately?
Also need to know what motor mounts to use for 302? and what tranny mounts to use for an AOD? |
Re: 55 Crown Vic Pretty sure if you try to pull the engine first you have to support the transmission, it only has one mounting point, on the tail shaft.
Not sure how well equipped your workspace is or how much cutting & fabrication work you'll have to do but, taking the front clip off the car first might ??? be an option. Someone who's done this before will chime in I'm sure. . |
Re: 55 Crown Vic Butch's Cool Stuff sells a mount kit but you'll have to modify the trans mount for the AOD per the site.
https://butchscoolstuff.com/54-56-fo...nt-kit-2507cp/ 937.260.2451 This kit is for Ford original V8 cars ONLY. See kit #2510-CP if your car was an orig 6-Cyl car or is a Wagon or Sedan Delivery. Bolts in any SB Ford V8 (289-302-351W with C-4, 3spd or 4spd. Other trannys with some modification). Super Good Fit |
Re: 55 Crown Vic im sure it can be done in one piece but its been awile since ive seen it done

Re: 55 Crown Vic It can come out as one, but you would either have to drop the trans x-mbr and possibly the cooling module (core supt) ot use on on those fancy store bought carb pad swivels.

Re: 55 Crown Vic For my 54, I pulled the engine and trans together. Put in back together that way too. Yes, you have to drop the rear mount crossmember. I can't really understand the manual saying pull them separate, unless only the engine is being worked on.

Re: 55 Crown Vic I can't address a passenger car, but I've pulled yblocks with fordo's and T-85 O/D's as a unit before. Make sure the engine picker is a good one, they are not light. Careful wheel alignment on the hoist and an adjustable plate like K mentions is a big help. Another set of hands is well worth having a half case around, too.
I was lucky, Dad always had access to equipment to pull big block from 2 ton trucks, so they were plenty strong and had good reach. You may need to get the car up a bit on jack stands also for clearance when you tilt the assembly. |
Re: 55 Crown Vic And don't forget to protect the W/S ...

Re: 55 Crown Vic Well I did get them out as one unit, removing the A/C condenser and the front grill. I used a vinyl coated aircraft cable under & through the intake manifold up to the shop crane. Worked great. Thanks for all who commented.
