need help - carb leak 1 Attachment(s)
Can somebody help me? My newly installed Ford 94 carb is leaking at the accelerator pump link rod. What can be the problem?

Re: need help - carb leak Float set too high, needle not closing off fuel flow or too much fuel pressure. Is it dripping inside throat venturis?
|
Re: need help - carb leak I have a pressure regulator, so that shouldn't be the problem. I set float level as per Ford manual - air horn upside down, measuring from the bottom of the float to the gasket surface 1 3/8 - 1 11/32. Is that correct?
Dripping with engine running? |
Re: need help - carb leak Check the carb float. Shake the brass type to see if it contains fuel. If it is the plastic type, replace it. Either type will cause the float to drop, allowing overflow. In the case of the plastic type, alcohol fuel will infiltrate the float. Virtually all gas today contains alcohol. Even if the pumps say no ethanol, the pump and hose still can hold it if the last user bought gasohol.

Re: need help - carb leak Dripping with engine running?
There should be no fuel in the pump shaft cavity, so somehow it is getting in there. If you shut the car off with no air cleaner look into the carb and see if it is dripping fuel down the venturis. Have you checked actual fuel pressure? |
Re: need help - carb leak There is also supposed to be a felt seal held in by a small round washer at the bottom of the pump rod hole in bowl. I don't know if it's there for lubrication for the pump rod, or to stop fuel from leaking. Like stated earlier above, there shouldn't be much fuel spilling over to the top of the pump rod to see a persistent leak at the bottom. My guess would be that the felt seal isn't meant to stop fuel since it's pourous.
Just my two cents worth. Sal |
Re: need help - carb leak Sal, Felt seal is to keep dirt out of cavity, no fuel should be in that part of carb. Might be a porous casting.

Re: need help - carb leak Angledrive, fuel in the bowl can easily spill over on top of the pump rod when the fuel sloshes in certain circumstances in 94 type carbs. Especially if the fuel level is too high. In my opinion the felt seal isn't to keep dirt out, especially at the bottom.

Re: need help - carb leak Sal, I guess it could, just never have seen that happen. Seems funny to me they would use a felt seal to stop fuel.

Re: need help - carb leak That's why I thought the seal was used to lube the pump rod. With a few drops of oil when assembled. Who knows ? Probably only the dead engineer that designed it.

Re: need help - carb leak You mentioned a regulator. All are not perfect.
All carbs leak "some" if you use them for yrs and yrs. Or at least a little over time, if you drive them and not polish after ever show. Not that I've seen a clean carb on a old engine. Not to say you don't have an issue. . |
Re: need help - carb leak Thanks guys for the input!
It looks like fuel level problem. I had an extra brass float lying around so I decided to switch floats. There was no fuel sloshing inside the old one but to my surprise the floats weigh differently, They are almost the same size but the new one is lighter than the old one. Unfortunately I didn't have scales to measure exact weights but I could feel the difference for sure. So, remembering physics, I decided to install the lighter float since it would give me lower fuel level. It worked! I still have some drops from a pump rod but now as much as it used to be. Now my next question: what are the symptoms of having too low fuel level? |
Re: need help - carb leak I think you will find it will seem to run out of fuel at speed.if you notice this then slowly ease off the throttle and you will notice it pickup speed.do you have a gauge in conjunction with regulator? if not I would question the accuracy of regulator1/2 to 1 lb will make a difference

Re: need help - carb leak thanks a lot!
