1935-36 Luggage Rack Length Difference

Can someone tell me how much longer the luggage rack mounting bracket is for a touring sedan over the length of one for a flatback sedan ?
Thanks, Mike

Well, now you have me wondering which one I have. I have never had it on my car so will measure it if you would like. Hopefully someone will have proof of what goes where.

Pictures of short vs long, 35-36 luggage rack brackets. The overall length of short bracket = 21", long bracket = 25" as measured in pictures.

John, thanks for the luggage rack pictures. They are exactly what we are looking for. I modified at set of the shorter ones and added in a 3.5" piece in the long straight section. I will pass the information to Steve to measure them. Want to make sure they are long enough before we mount the rack on his touring sedan. See you in TN. Mike Fehniger

You're welcome Mike, and yes, definitely looking forward to the meet in Tennessee next June. Hope to see you two there with that nice looking 35 Sedan.

Having just read this post with great interest, I went down to my worship to
measure which brackets I have for my convertible sedan luggage rack and have
discovered I have the short ones. Does this mean there isn't room to have the
rear spare mounted on the rear if a person uses the shorter brackets?

Peter,

The long brackets are for the sedan body types with trunks (the touring sedans), which convertible sedans did not have until well into the 1936 model year.

Dave,

Thanks for answering that as I've got my short arms all nice and painted
body color. That really makes my day.

Which one for the coupe?
I have an assembly that has been chromed and never installed.
I assumed ( obviously incorrectly ) that they were the same for all models.
Prolly need to sell it. I doubt I will ever use it

After research at The Benson Ford Research Center I discovered that Ford never designed a bracket for the Coupe, Roadster or Cabriolet. The 48-18590/91-B bracket was for Touring sedans and the 48-18590/91-C bracket was for Sedans, Conv. Sedans and Phaetons. There was a special 48-18590/91-A bracket for Sedans going to Arabia. Most likely longer to accommodate the double spare tires mounted on the back of the vehicle.

Don, with all due respect, Ford may not have designed luggage rack brackets specifically for 35-36 Ford coupes, roadsters, or cabriolets, but they will definitely fit using the brackets designed for sedans.
The 35 3w coupe I purchased in 2014 had a 37 luggage rack that was installed using a set 35-36 short brackets.
Now maybe based on your findings at the Benson Research Center, a luggage rack would not be correct for
concourse judging of 35-36 Ford coupes, roadsters, or cabriolets on an EFV8C/A show field.

John, After 85/86 years it is impossible to say for certain what Ford had in mind with their luggage racks. Perhaps because roadsters, coupes and cabriolets had plenty of storage room in the rear, Ford didn't think that it was necessary to use a luggage rack on those models. Ford never said not to use them on those models, but they sure did ignore those body styles in their correspondence, engineering drawings and releases.

Another contradiction between what Ford said and what dealers/customers did is the string wound clock mirror. Ford advised his dealers not to install string wound clock mirrors in open style vehicles since the clock was not water proof. The glove box clock was an acceptable alternative and even supplied as standard on Convertible Sedans .
