rear end change
 

Morning guys.....while going through the rear brake's on the roadster. I discovered that the linings were completely gone....the grease seals are leaking and everything should be completely disassembled and cleaned and rebuilt.. My question is....I have another rear end that I bought from a reputable guy that has been rebuilt and has new brakes on it.the radius rods are on it and the have been blasted and powder coated.....would it be easier to change the rear end rather than disassembling the old one and replacing the brakes? I will also add that the drive shaft and torgue tube are still attached to the new rear end and that I would most likely use those as well. Can I install the rearend and dirive shaft as on unit.

Yes you can install as a unit. You will need a spring spreader as the rear spring is under tension and can be dangerous.You can take spring out with the axle assembly or leave it on the car. Roll the old axle out on a floor jack and roll the new one in.

R&R the complete rear end is much quicker and easier than rebuilding what you have.

thanks guys...I thought that was going to be the answer. Where do I get the spreader...is it something I fabricate or buy from a vender?

If you have a local Model A club, they may have one in their "tool chest".

Check the rear end ratio on the new rear end before you install it and be sure it is something you will like.

Just got off the phone with Don at Snyders.....ordered a new spreader. Better have the right tool for the job.

I will Kevin....I just got an email and the spring spreader is backordered a week or two. I'll post pics when we do the job. I'd be willing to loan the spreader when I'm done with it.

Hello guys, working on my 32 Pickup, removed rear end, replaced the shackle bushings, now ready to install rear end. I put shackles plates on passenger side rolled over to the drive side, and have a 3-4 inch between spring eye and housing? Is this where the Leaf Spring Spreader comes in handy?

You will find a small note included with your new spreader that say's, "grease spreader prior to use!" Be sure and remember to do it, it will make the job a breeze. These spreaders work great and are built with safety in mind. Have fun with your "A!"

Yes, the spring eyes need to be spread with a quality spring spreader.
