Carb issue - 29 CCPU
 

OK, carburator gurus: Ol' Clyde, '29 CCPU, refused to start but spun freely and quickly. He is still 6-volt, with an Optima. All places that should have voltage have the proper voltage.......a friend manually choked (momentarily), and Ol' Clyde fired and ran perfectly. All is well.......until about three hours later, when he again refused to start. I am now thinking there is a carburator issue. I have a carburator, purchased several years ago and supposedly totally rebuilt, and am thinking to just replace and see what happens. Yours thoughts and guidance, Gentlemen??

That is the quickest and easiest thing to try. In less than 5 minutes you'll have your answer (assuming the spare carb is OK).

Yep try a known carb but I reckon 90% of carb problems are ignition problems:)!

Or gas flow problems. Attach an "alternate temporary supply" first and see if it will keep running.

Those 80 year old gas tanks attract (and generate) all sorts of foreign objects which like to block and cover the pipe leading to the carburetor.

If the float is leaking it gets heavy and sinks , pretty soon the carburetor will begin to leak profusely because the float can't rise and close the float needle valve . In such cases the carburetor will overfill and continue to leak . in many cases , the cut off valve at the tank doesn't completely cut off the flow .

Had them run very rough without carburetor leaking because of leaking float

Did you try choking it on the failed re-start?? GAV is set where??

I have had the choke lever loosen where the nut holds it on the carb and it isn't being controlled by the choke rod. One time 45 years ago the choke sudden flew on while going down the road and recently one came loose and I thought I was choking and nothing was happening. Probably not the problem but something to verify.

Thanks, everyone: I should have indicated that I tried a manual choke - no go. As far as the gav is concerned, it is out about 3/4 turn, and I never have had a need to change it. Ol' Clyde has fired and run perfectly for many years without changing anything. I pulled the fuel line, and received a steady stream of fuel......the carburator does not and has never leaked. The fuel shutoff works - I verified when the fuel line was disconnected from the carb.....I hope to have the time tomorrow or the next day to try a different carburator. Amazing how little time is available when one "retires!"

If it happens again, immediately take a lead off a spark plug and space it a 1/4 inch away from the plug, then try to start to confirm you have spark. Just to confirm it is not an ignition issue.

Today's fuels are crap. Even if this is not the problem it is a good idea to pull the carb and drop bottom half. You will be surprised what your find. Most of the time very fine rust and crud. I try to pull mine every other season if no problems and clean it out and the idle jet. Does not take much to mess up the idle circuit then it will be hard to start.
If I had a new carb I would put it on! I did that and sent my old one in for rebuild and it is now on the shelf for the next time (and there will be a next time! ) What also helps is
to close gas valve and run carb dry when you park it for more than a couple of days.
