Help with ashtray retainers and ashtray in a 1940 dash

Hi guys. Need me some help. I have a dash out of a 1940 deluxe and I am trying to figure out how to put the ashtrays and retainers in. I think it is the pull out article dash. Any pictures would be appreciated

Early or late ash trays?

Think they are late

If you have the correct retainers, they are held in with 2 small sheet metal screws. There are Left and Rights on the retainers and ash trays and covers. The early ones are completely different and the ash trays are kind of triangular shaped. Later ones are more rectangular and tilt out with the knob at the top.

One low 40: A s you may know, the early production 40's had the "push in push up" ashtrays. They later ones were "pull out and push in" style. Here's the early style.

They just don’t seem to line up correctly

Maybe you have the Lefts and Rights mixed up. You should be able to put the ash try in the correct retainer easily in you hand. You might have the left retainer with the right ash tray or vice versa. When you say "line up" what are you describing? The retainers can easily be bent. Did these ash trays come out of that dash?

Bob's ashtrays look like the later version.

The early version has the knob on the bottom for push in and up. The later version has the knob on the top for pull down. You mentioned they are not lining up. These old parts sometimes get tweaked a little from being moved around during there life before you get them. Look at the ash tray openings in the dash. You might have to move where they attach gently to get the the fit you like. Good luck

Not sure but, is the configuration of the sheet metal where the ash trays fit the same for both early and late models? Are any modifications needed behind the dash where the ashtrays fit or are they both interchangeable with ease? Here's the 'early" version. The chrome ashtray is separate from the "door" and can be lifted out by hand to empty when the "door" is opened. I think they were originally cadnium plated, not chrome. Looks like Henry saved a few dollars with the later redesign.

The GREEN wire is from the Constant Voltage Reducer that reduces the incoming 12v to 6 V to the TEMP. FUEL and OIL PRESSURE gauges. BATT gauge is isolated from rest of gauges and is fed from a 12V wire from a fuse block with an in- line 60HM reducer to make the BATT read accurately. ( Thank you Flat Ernie for that info. years ago.) Car uses a 1 wire alternator.

PS: Made the top and bottom chrome strips from cold rolled steel & had them chromed plated many years ago before Bob Drake made the repos.

I have not used aftermarket ash trays so I don't know how well they fit. However, I have found VERY FEW remakes of anything that were exactly like the originals. You clearly have the later models. the 2 tabs where the retainers attach to the dash could be moved side to side a tiny bit maybe if your vertical side gaps are off.
If they are in the holes and open and close without scraping, it might be the best you can do with remakes.
