Engine number I have a Engine that has "USPO 143" stamped as it's number. Is this a legit number or was it just restamped over the years. It does not look as if an old number was ground off. The back story was it was in an old mail carrier's car.

Re: Engine number It is probably a stamping made after model A production was over. Ford made a fair number of blocks after model A production was complete for replacement engines and other equipment that used model A engines. These blocks had no engine number stamped on them. In fact I have a diamond block that has no engine number on it and the pad has NOT been ground off. I am posting a link that shows the diamond on a later block in the third or fourth post down. Does your block have the same diamond as shown in the upper righthand corner of the picture?

The bodies were made by contract for the USPOD so it is quite possible that the number was actually original for the government. |
Re: Engine number Will have to look to see if it's a diamond block. I don't have skills to post a pic but will work on it. Thanks for the replies.

Click the "blue post reply" lower left bottom of page, when text box opens, in the top middle of the bar you will see a "paperclip" next to the smiley face, click that, a window will open "manage attachments" click "choose file" then pick your picture, after you picked up to seven pics click the top "upload" on the right hand side of the text box, wait for it to upload. You must type something, anything into the text box message, scroll down to see "preview post" at bottom of your text box, you should see your message as it will appear when you post, if you like it click "submit reply" to post. Just make sure the picture file is not to large |

Hmm.............funny it isn't lost or broken then. |
Re: Engine number The US post office stamped USPO on everything in their vehicles. I have a starter that has a large USPO stamped in it. They also branded the tires
|
Re: Engine number The postal service did brand some items, tires later spark plugs, etc. but my unrestored 31 postal truck has nothing branded. Depends on the local POD garages at the time. You likely have a rebuilt motor from one of the local garages and since story was an unofficial mail carrier, they just did a swap.
