What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Working from home certainly has its benefits,:) not the least of which is, I get to work/play in the garage on my lunch hour… As you know, if you read my postings, the Zephyr developed a knocking noise coming from the transmission a week or so ago.:( My worst fear is that something in the transmission let go however, upon closer inspection, I don’t think that is the case. I’m hoping that the problem lies in the clutch and its related parts. At lunch, I started to disassemble the interior so that we could take a good look. I got everything out, that needed to come out, to give access to the transmission.

I got the car up on the lift and that’s as far as I got.

Tomorrow Mike, Don and maybe a few other “Barner’s” are coming over to work/play so I hope we’ll at least be able to isolate and identify the problem.

The Throw out bearing spring can be checked through the small vented cover and you can see inside of it.

I got the inspection cover off and the phone started ringing so I haven't had a chance to do anything else. Think I'll just wait till tomorrow before I get back into it.

Thanks Frenchy, I appreciate that. I put a clutch in the Zephyr around 8 or 9 years ago but, like most of us, I suffer from bouts of CRS more and more these days. Vic

Pete, that's a '68 Jag XKE Series 1.5 that my dad bought new. I pulled the gas tank out to clean it. The car needs brakes, etc. before I brought it down to Florida (unbeknownst to me) my dad had let it sit in an old chicken coop for several years so it now needs an interior and top as well. Here's another photo of it.

Shadetree, that transmission with the side mounted "top loader" was used in the '38 & '39 LZ only however, the gears are the same as the '39 Ford.

Vic

The first thing I would do is raise the back of the car and have it on jack stands than start it up and slowly put it in gear and bring up the RPM and see if you can hear the noise while you are inside the car to possibly identify where it maybe coming from. Let us know.

In my neighborhood we say we're getting together to "play cars" just like we did when we were kids only the cars are bigger now.:)

That's a great transmission!
I had one in a '40 coupe 50 years ago.
Now I have one in another '40 coupe.

All car makers made beautiful cars in the '30s.
Those Lincolns are a good example.
Look at the crap they're putting out now.
They seem to be in competition to make the ugliest car!

Rockey, your '39 is really good looking. Hopefully our '39 will look as good someday soon. Vic

Today’s Fun in the Garage:)
Mike, Don, John and Cliff came over to give me a hand with the Zephyr.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...2012/001-8.jpg
After some troubleshooting, we decided that the noise was not coming from the gearbox but instead it was coming from the bell housing, clutch, etc. area.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...2012/002-8.jpg
Mike got in the car and John went underneath to disconnect the torque tube from the transmission
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...2012/006-3.jpg
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...2012/008-1.jpg
We got ready to lower the rear and discovered that the spring would not clear the cross member without the help of a spring spreader, which we did not have.:(

So, we decided that it was time for pizza:D and that we would continue next Saturday.

Will there be pizza next Saturday?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Pizza is as much a part of our Saturday play time as tools. Will you be down in the Sunshine State next week, if so; should we make a place at the table for you?
