Question about pinion bearing

1 Attachment(s)
Good afternoon good folks,

My question is about the bearing that fits against the pinion inside the "pumpkin".

If you refer to the attached picture, where I have marked the red arrow, how big should this gap be i.e. between the top of the bearing and the bottom of the pinion? Should there be a gap at all?

Your expert advice is always greatly appreciated!

Kind regards

Re: Question about pinion bearing

Per the Tom Endy article and my experiences, the bearing race flange should contact the pinion gear shoulder. If all is correct, a bit of lubricant was applied to the surfaces, and no foreign matter is in the space, a small press should accomplish this without major difficulty.

Best Wishes,

John

Re: Question about pinion bearing

Thanks everyone, the Tom Endy article spells it out perfectly: the bearing must rest against the pinion.
Thanks once again for all the help.
Kind regards
Mike

The article you have been referred to has been updated to a 2014 revision. To access it go to the web site of the Santa Anita A's of Arcadia, California at www.santaanitaas.org. On the home page put your cursor on "Technical Reference" and my name will appear below, click on it and scroll to the 2014 revised differential article. There is also a companion article next to it. These are PDF files and you are welcome to download them and print them out.
