26-27 Hogshead question
 

What was the reason Ford added the 2 top mounting lugs to the top of the 26-27 hogshead? There had to be a reason. Thank you in advance, Jim

The '26-'27 cover was the heaviest of the covers. I think mainly they wanted to help evenly support the weight and help keep the rear bearing in alignment.

Those hogshead lugs match the bolt lugs on the rear of the '26-'27 block.

Reason is to maintain the centerline of the 4th main and to assist that vibration and twist was minimized for reducing bent pans,.

For keeping the 4th main in alignment, shims are added to the mounting bolts to push the hogshead where it needs to be.

Those bolts also held straps to each side of the engine mounting flanges to the frame. Those straps resist twisting of the engine in the frame.

The 26/27 hogs head weights about the same as any hogs head from 1919 to 1925. Also the pan had the inspection plate changed to the 4 dip type. Because the opening was now larger there was less strength in the area around the radius rod support.
