1938 Deluxe vs 1939 Satandard Nose

If you were to park a '38 Deluxe along side a 1939 Standard and unbolt everything forward of the firewall, then swap everything back on the other, would everything fit and be the same, or are there unique parts? Long way of asking what parts are the same if I want to collect all I need for a '39 Standard nose. I've always thought that beaked hood was unique, or were there two different styles? Thanks for the help. Bob

Here are comparison shots of a 1938 Ford Deluxe (Blue) and a 1939 Ford Standard (Tan). While the Grilles and Hood are the same shape, the trim is different on both. The side Panels are also a different pattern, but are the same dimensions. The front fenders are the same on both models. I hope that these pictures help answer your question.

The stainless body trim will not align from 38 deluxe to 39 standard.
The hoods while basically similar have all the trim and hood ornament holes in different places.
As you can see from the pics - the 38 deluxe trim fits in the ridge while the 39 std ( and 39 deluxe ) is about an inch or so lower.
Also the 38 deluxe trim is smooth while the 39 standard's trim has a vee like the 39 deluxe.
I have always thought that the 39 standard hood ornament and the way the stainless trim cuts back on the side panels was a styling masterpiece.

Thanks for the quick replies, the '38 DeLuxe is the one I like the best. Bob

Re: 1938 Deluxe vs 1939 Satandard Nose

To close the Hood on the 1938 Ford Deluxe models, you first have to lift the Hood to disengage the mechanism before you close it. Many uneducated people just try to pull the Hood down, which results in a bent Hood and Chrome Trim on the left hand side, as the single Support Bracket is located on the left hand side. Next time you see a 1938 Ford Deluxe, check the Hood on the left hand side for previous damage.
On the 1939 Ford Standards, Ford made a great improvement with this single bracket that was still located on the left hand side. They redesigned it so that you can just pull the Hood down to close it on the 1939 Ford Standards, a great improvement. Just remember, if you want to close the Hood on a 1938 Ford Deluxe, you must lift it first before lowering it.

Like them both, but am partial to the 39 STD for some reason. ;)

Same applies to the 38 Std. Almost all 38 hoods show some damage due to this.

'37's had the same problem with the hoods... Not that it matters but, my favorite Standard front clip is the '38. Here's an interesting photo I found, it is a '38 Standard Sedan Delivery but it has a few Deluxe touches like the stainless (chrome) windshield, twin windshield wipers, etc.;)

Vic, I'm with you. I think the '38 Standard front end is beautiful. Can't really explain why, it just appeals to me.

I like the 38 std grille much better, too.

I had never seen the 39 std until just recently, and this from being an old Ford guy since the mid 60's. I like it a lot, too.

The 1938 Ford Standards are great looking early Fords. The earlier models lacked the Chrome Trim. It is hard to believe that Old Henry redesigned the front fenders on these models, which are unique to the 38 Standard. They are completely different to any other model Ford.

Here are comparison pictures of the Early and Late production 1938 Ford Standards. That added Chrome Trim on the Grille and along the side really enhanced the look of these 1938 Ford Standards.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ If the '38 Standard front fenders differ from '38 Deluxe/'39 Standard what are the tell tail features to look fore? I sure don't want to buy the wrong fenders. Bob

Here are some pictures of a 1938 Ford Standard front fender. You will note that they differ from the 1937 Ford fenders, as they are smooth at the top and there is crease like the 37 Fords. I hope that these photos are a help.

"It is hard to believe that Old Henry redesigned the front fenders on these models, which are unique to the 38 Standard."

Henry didn't care much for styling. He left that up to Edsel. Edsel hired Bob Gregorie to head the styling department. An inspired choice, if there ever was one.

Re: 1938 Deluxe vs 1939 Satandard Nose

Here is another question, are the two grille sections that attach to the fenders the same except for trim attachment holes? I see a bulge were the stainless fits in the bottom of the Blue car above, this area looks smooth on the tan car. Bob
