Parts Identification Please
 

Can anyone please help in identifing some parts for me? Here in England I recently bought a quantity of NOS parts from a deceased estate. Among the parts there are number of generator armatures (part number FAB-10005A) and field coils (part number 8C-10175-C) The armatures are some four and half inches in diameter and much heavier that any that I have seen and not mentioned in any of my parts books. These may be of Canadian origin and probably supplied to the British Ministry of Defence during the 1940's/1950's possibly for a military vehicle. Thanks for any assistance.

That does look like a pretty heavy duty unit. And the military always “over builds” things for reliability.

8C prefix indicates 1948 commercial or pickup. The engineering suffix of "C" indicates the 4th change from the original design. The FAB is under a new prefix format that started in 1952 and indicates standard usage. This prefix system changed again in 1954 to start with "B" for decade of the 50s and a number indicating the last digit of the year in that decade. There are other digits that indicate application. Casting number prefixes for engine parts of the 50s are an exception to the overall code system but there are lists available to decipher casting number prefixes. The numerical code remained the same overall.

Many parts were used over a fairly long period and can range over a number of production years. Numbers were changed when the part was obsolete for a new design replacement. Many of the cars and light trucks used the same generators until the Y-block change in 1954. There were also 6-cylinder applications. The change to 12-volt for the 1956 model year was a big change.

Thanks for your help and advice which is much appreciated. I have dozens of these armatures and wanted to find a use for them rather than consigning them to metal scrap salvage.
