General Info HI All
I have a 292, I've had it for about 3 years + - Had idea's at the time to rebuild it, but other projects got in the way. But there are some questions that I hope someone could answer. First. I need a fan for my 292, any leads? Second My 292 is from a 64 pickup, 3sp... So I read that the bell housing is different between the car and truck, any reason why? would the bell housing work in say a 56/57 Ford? leads for a bell housing for a car I really don't know my plans for the motor right now, pulled the heads yesterday, had a little water in 2 cylinders I know about John M.. and his parts BTW I do have the Ford Y-Block book... The 'truck' bell housing may have these large motor mount flanges as part of it.
Ford car bell housings use a different setup without the flanges. edit: in this photo the lower curved portion is a stamped sheet-metal flywheel cover that bolts on to the main upper cast iron piece. . |
Re: General Info Fans; nearly all auto and light truck fans from Ford from the late 50's to the mid 90's have the same bolt pattern. The exceptions are the 385 block, and some 300 six engines. Fan spacer and bolts should be kept together, as too long a bolt sometimes will strike the water pump. This includes several of the clutch fans. I ran a six blade fan on my 312 for years, it came from a Granada 250 six with air.

Re: General Info Plus if it came out of a truck, it probably has a rear sump oil pan and pick up tube. If going in a '56-'57 Ford, it needs a front sump oil pan.

thanks for that info... It is a rear sump.. The bell housing does not look like that... I have the 3sp that came with it. It does have a front mount on the engine... But the bell housing does not look like that at all... in fact mine is like half moon I found that this engine uses the Motorcraft FL 300, anyone have a number for a air filter, Fram, Motorcraft, etc: |
Re: General Info dmsfrr is showing a typical manual transmission bellhousing for an F100 pickup in his photo. They do look like a half-moon if the bottom sheet-metal flywheel cover is removed. In his photo, the cover is installed on the cast-iron bellhousing.

Re: General Info It's not just the mounting ears, the bell is deeper, and the truck transmission has a longer input shaft. I think the front bearing on the trans is also larger, so the bell has a large opening (and bolt pattern).

Re: General Info Did I make a mistake, I had not seen the bell housing for over a year, stored
away. I went out and looked at it, and it does have the mounting pads.. sorry... I think my current plans are to have the block hot tanked, then check the Rods and Pistons, rings, crank either get a new rotating assembly or cleanup what I have. then decide on a new Cam. I looked on the net, and have not seen a solid roller lifter for the Y block have any of you seen one? Mike thanks for that info... I do find it a little confusing. But a car bell housing will bolt to the block.. so I have an option... Best |
Re: General Info Which Y-block book do you have? The old Eickman book? If so do yourself a favor and get the book by Charlie Morris.

have any of you seen one?" There are no roller lifters available for the Ford Y-Block since they had small diameter body mushroom lifters that install from the bottom. They were all solid mechanical lifters. Sal |

57 I have the Morris book... still thanks scicala just thought I would ask. I've decided to just rebuild my 292 and go for a super charger for the power. get new parts as needed, up grade to better parts if needed. "pushrods" for instance Do either of you have a oil and air filter number... the Motorcraft FL 300 is suppose to work... (sold at home depot for under $6 on net Best |
Re: General Info The FL300 oil filter should work - just be sure to check the gasket to flange for proper seating. the 300 is a short filter, the FL1A is the most common one used, it's longer. Also check the FL299, it was/is used on bigger engines but if old my memory serves correctly, I am pretty sure it has the same mounting and sealing surface as the FL1A and FL300. Clearance is to be considered to make sure there's room for whichever filter is used. I sold hundreds of those filters back in my days as a Ford parts guy. I use FL1A on my '56 292.

Re: General Info On a passenger car, an FL400 is easier to fit in between the steering and clutch linkage to put on with one hand.

Re: General Info The bellhousing shown above - is that for a 4 speed? I thought the 3 speed trucks used the same trans pattern as the cars??? For some reason the trans bolt pattern looks different than the three speed cars.

I"m just getting all the info and making a parts list. Removed the pistons and crank today. Will be going to the machine shop for mag and hot tank the block I pretty sure from the double roller timing chain that the engine has had major work before.. Best |

and did the 64 292 use tubular push rods? There seems to be no damage to the pistons. the wrist pins seem to be tight I'll be taken the lot to L & R machine shop Santa Springs on Monday... see what they think Best PS: crank EC 44, caps are EBC 6329B. one looks like it has a t at the end, a bitt away. block is A2AE 6015 |
