rebuilding shifter forks

Got my dad's transmission apart and one of the shifter forks is worn where the shift lever ball slides into it. Does anyone have any experience fixing these. They do not seem like they are being reproduced, surprising as everything else is.

Usually 2nd & 3rd fork is worn. Switch the forks & use the worn one for 1st & rev the good one for 2 nd & 3rd.

The slots can be welded up and milled. Beware of the repos they are terrible.

Re: rebuilding shifter forks

I had this problem and was lucky enough to find an old-fashioned welding and tool repair shop in a nearby town. Just one guy in the workshop behind his house. He welded up the ball and the forks and they work great. Also worked on my steering arms. Maybe someone in your area is still doing this work. It doesn't take special Model A expertise, they just need to restore the slot to square and make it the proper width for the ball.

Re: rebuilding shifter forks

If the notches on the forks are worn, good chance the ball on the lever is too.

A tower overhaul seminar is a good project for a club seminar. The attached article is about one that was conducted for my local club.
