Crab distributor 6v to 12v
 

So on the original system 6v positive earth the resistor gives approx 3.5 v to distributor points. Then change to 12v negative earth coil is changed to 12v but distributor can still remain also existing condenser remains.
The reason the distributor does not need to be changed out is? Less amps with 12v?
Keen for an explanation on this one.

There are no components inside the distributor that are voltage-sensitive. And, anything that MIGHT be current-sensitive is not threatened because OHM's Law would reduce the effects of any current involved, like small gauge wires and the sizing of connection hardware. The points don't care about voltage. The coil and any resistors are the only items requiring consideration with a voltage change..... IGNITION-wise! DD

Thanks for that. So would the original resistor need to be changed or is this dependant upon primary resistance of 12 v coil in use ie 3 ohms?

the original resistor would need to be changed , a Botch S002 R coil is a good one to use in conjunction with a 12 volt common resistor reducing to approx 8 Volt , Repco or auto stop .Pan pacific ,

So now have a 12v coil which states on box external resistor required.
This I take that I will need a total of approx 3ohms, coil plus resistor.

Points and coil still need 4 volts. 1957 ballasts in the system will work. coil restiance makes up the difference. Ford ran 6 volt dizzies on 12 volts after 1954. Just used a ballast coil resistance and a ballast.

this is what I need from 3rd Generation a 12v coil with 3.3 ohms primary resistance yes?
Just want it simple without an external resistor

Points are just a switch,not resistance sensitive.

3 ohms resistance means its a 12v coil

1.5 ohms resistance means its a 6v coil

Bosch blue coil,35k output,designed to run without resistor,cheap on amazon.

Phil, you just need somewhere in the range of 3 ohms in the system. So 1.5 ohm coil + 1.5 ohm resistor OR a 3 ohm coil without a resistor. These numbers are just the general range, the 3.3 ohm coil would be fine.

Yep thats what I'm aiming at. Just thought a 12v 3ohms would save the need for external resistor. Can get one locally in NZ.

Phil, the coil we sell 3.3 ohm is a oil filled version of the Bosch 00012 coil. You certainly should be able to find one local and save on the transit cost. They were commonly used on Volkswagens

Yes was aware of the one you carry, and that was also my thinking about locating local and saving on transit.
