26 model t with a distributor
 

Question: How do i go about timing this 26 T that has a distributor? Need point gap also. Thanks in advance!

The breaker point gap for any vintage 4-cylinder Ford engine should be the same. The condenser or capacitor value should fit the type of coil utilized. If it has adjustable spark control and a breaker point cam that can be adjusted like a model A then it would make the set up of timing very similar to the model A. If the point breaker cam is fixed then the distributor would have to rotated to adjust timing. In any case, the breaker points should open very near TDC when spark control is fully retarded. If there is no spark control then the points will have to open at full advance which would not be very conducive to starting the engine. It would need a way to retard the timing for starting such as a centrifugal advance mechanism to keep from kicking back and breaking the starter or the cranker's arm.

The breaker points need to open with the rotor pointing at #1 cylinder when both valves are closed and #1 piston is just past TDC with the spark retarded completely.

Around .018 on the gap. The Model T distributor does not have a set No 1 terminal so depending on which terminal the rotor points to becomes No 1.

Bring No 1 piston on compression to just past TDC. With the spark lever up check to see if the points are just about to open. If it is way off, pull the distributor rotate the shaft a bit and reinstall with rod off till you find a place where it is close. This may take several tries. If it is close, take the rod off and rotate the head till the points are about to open. You may need to bend the rod to get the correct setting in ether case. Sometimes to get timed means that a different contact will be used for No 1, reinstall wires in the correct order 1243 from there.

The points need to open for starting just after TDC.


I should add this is the general directions for T era distributors. If it is new type some of the above with still work. Which one do you have?

Probably either Texas T or Model T Ranch types. Those seem to be the most common now. Without a photo, it would just be a guess.

If it is one of the new distributors (Texas T Parts, etc) you should be able to download instructions from their website or one of their vendors websites. Post a photo and we can probably help you.
