starter/sol II Hi again. Still no luck.
Reolaced the solenoid today, cleaned (wire wheel) all the connections (except on the starter, rocked the car, tapped starter with small hammer (Model A "trick"). Still get a slight noise at sol. Jumped R&L posts of the sol, got sparks ! HELP Anyone nearby interested in helping "Old guy"?? Thanks in advance. Paul |
Re: starter/sol II If you jumped it across the solenoid and just ended up with sparks either the starter is locked up internally or something is locking up the engine.

Re: starter/sol II I'm in Florida but wouldn't mind helping. If you put it in 3rd gear , can you rock the car enough to move the motor some ? Make sure the key is off ! Do you still have the crank handle for starting ? I'm with jseery, big sparks at sol means somethings not moving , da , you already know that but it's starter or mtr .
You could remove the spark plugs to make rotating the motor easier ,either by rocking or the starter crank handle |

Re: starter/sol II Wife and I rocked the car this am, no change. Will try loosening the starter.
I can't turn it over by hand, it's a 59 block with fan on the crankshaft. Paul |
Re: starter/sol II Paul, I know you said you cleaned all the connections. But, is there any chance you might have missed the battery cables on the battery posts? I only mention this because it happened to me and I thought it was a locked up starter. (I also load tested my battery because it acted like a "simi" dead battery.)

Re: starter/sol II UPDATE: Motor locked. I read several dissertations on how to remove the starter and now that I screwed up I have the starter shell out on the ground BUT the armature and nose are "locked" solid in the bell housing.
Probably going with a new starter/bendix. Any suggestions on how to get the rest out??? Paul |
Re: starter/sol II Ouch! That's a new one. For that to happen, the ring gear on the flywheel may have shifted. Can you look around the armature to see if the ring gear is flush with the back of the flywheel? If not, the flywheel must come out to fit a new ring gear. Can you get a punch onto the Bendix gear to knock it back? You may have to hack or torch off the starter shaft. In any case there is a fair chance that some teeth on the flywheel are buggered, which is likely to cause the problem to recur.

Re: starter/sol II FINALLY............I was able to get a small s/driver between the case and bell housing and finally able to get it out. NOTHING looks damaged, Bendix gear moves nicely on the spiral, spring, locking nuts and washers undamaged. Hesitant to re-install, so going with a new re-built on Monday and a new Bendix.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE HELP/SUGGESTIONS OFFERED ! ! ! Paul :D:) |

Remove spark plugs for easy turn over of engine. Mark ring gear at starter motor hole. Turn over and inspect ring gear teeth. May require some" dressing" prior fitting replacement starter. Also piece of mind for ring gear tooth damage or movement on flywheel. All the best. Phil NZ |
Re: starter/sol II Paul, hope the ring gear turns out to be okay. Thought of having to replace it isn't good to contemplate from where you are now!!
I got a made in the USA starter with the conventional bendix from Mac VP. Not sure what part sources you may use. Really like Phil's suggestions above!! Best of luck. |
Re: starter/sol II Joe's is 1111111hr 45 min, Gotham about 1 1/4 hr away. Will call both Mon am.
I missed a show today and 1 tomorrow. I think there's one left in 2 weeks and then the CSRA swap meet. Paul Ring gear looks good. This is the first problem since I got it last year. |
