Removing fan blade

It's been a long time since I've replaced a fan blade. I am putting a new radiator in my '29 Coupe and getting the old metal fan blade off and a new aluminum one put on. What is the trick to getting the blade off again? I've tried to tap it gently from behind with a hammer but no go.

crack the nut, hold pump in two hands by the fan blades , if you have 3 hands give the nut a tap with hammer & it should crack the taper, NOW when fitting alloy fan make sure you put a thin steel washer on before the nut ,

turn the nut until half the threads are still on the water pump shaft. Thread another bolt into the nut on the remaining threads. Holding the fan, rap the head of the added bolt with a hammer and the fan will easily break the taper and loosen.

Maybe now would be a good time to replace the water pump. I had a similar situation when I fixed a blown head gasket. I changed heads to a "Police head", new leakless water pump, and new aluminum fan.

Yes tapping on the nut works well. I take the nut off, reverse it and thread it back on 90% of the way. Be careful not to strike it too hard and off center as you can bend the shaft at the threaded area.
