marmon herrington F-1 trucks

Does anybody know how many ford trucks per year were converted to 4-wheel drive by marmon-herrington? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks,

Re: marmon herrington F-1 trucks

No records exist. But years ago M-H gurus Chuck Mantiglia and Don Chew got together to compare notes. Chuck told me they agreed that about 200 half tons per year were converted.

Since my main interest is the tonner and 3/4 ton models I’ve taken a little different track on the production counts. I’ve archived the unique axle numbers of surviving trucks I’ve found. These trucks include the <47 Tonner Model OT5-4, 48-51 3/4 ton single speed transfer case model R3-4, 51/52 two speed transfer case model R32-4, and early 1953 M254s. Looks like the same 200 to 300 range applies here too. Stu

Thanks Stu, were more F-2s and F-3s converted than F-1s?

Re: marmon herrington F-1 trucks

Marmon-Herrington upgraded the F-2 to the F-3’s 6800 lb specs. There were none-the-less small differences between the models, such as wheels and rear shocks. I have a lot more F-3s archived than F-2s, so must assume more F-3s were converted than F-2s. Making this exercise so inexact, we don’t know whether M-H started numbering at #1, #100, or what.

There were two numbering sequences within the groupings because the differentials on single speeds are offset right, and to the left on two speeds. From 1947 to 1953 combining both groups I have a range of 707 within single speeds and 436 within two speeds. That 1143 across six and one half years yields around 175 per year, but again, I don’t know when the numbers started, and I don’t know how far into 1953 M-H needed to go to use up the old spec parts.

When Chuck and I discussed this years ago he was of the view that more F-2/3 conversions had to have been done than F-1s to justify the expense of complete disassembly, frame mods needed on the bigger models, then reassembly that was not needed on the half tons. Whether there were more or less will remain a mystery until I find much earlier conversions with lower numbers to tell where they started counting. Stu

OK Stu, these are good numbers, thanks for sharing.

Re: marmon herrington F-1 trucks

Your original question was focused on the half tons. The only effort I know of that’s been made to archive half tons was Mark Mossell’s registry of the surviving Rangers. Of the 50+ that were produced Mark documented about half as survivors. And as might be expected, since he did his work a few more have resurfaced. Stu

Very interesting thread. I have never owned a MH 4x, have tried several times to buy one but have never been able to make a deal. I know where there is a '51/52 F-1 sitting on a remote farm in Centeral Idaho, the truck is very complete other than the top of the cab having been removed for some unknown reason.
I developed a fetish for the first series of Ford factor built 4x's in 1959, I have three of them:

A completely rebuilt F-100 Custom Cab with about every accessory listed in the Ford book. I also have a very nice original 59 F-100 that is a daily driver on the farm and another 59 F-100 that is missing the V8 engine and transfer case, both of which I now have.
I also have a '63 F-100 V8 4x, 8' Custom Cab Unibody, that reputedly Ford never made and a '66 F-250 V8 4x, 4 spd, 8' bed, which is a limited series truck. Of the few '65,66 F-250 4x's I have seen, not more than a half dozen, they generally always have the '58-60 8' StyleSide bed and a very heavy duty chassis, similar to a 1.5 ton truck.

Hmmm, could this ‘51 be for sale? Stu

Hi.
I am not to sure if the '51 MH is still sitting out on the farm in Idaho. I'll be in Idaho in late August for a few days, I'll look into the situation of the truck. if all else fails I'll have a friend that lives close to the farm where the truck was located look into it. I have several pix of the trk, showing the engine, V8, 4spd, and several different angles of the exterior/undercarriage. Wm

Much appreciated. I have a friend that would be interested in adding a half ton project to his job jar. Stu

Re: marmon herrington F-1 trucks

Stu, what prompted my original question was that I am preparing to sell my 1948 F-1. It is a complete, no rust, running and stopping vehicle. It does need quite a bit of work to finish but could end up being the finest in the country, If you know of someone who might be interested I can supply photos and details.

I’ll do a screen print of this and forward it to the buddy that I know is interested, and to a few other M-H buddies that group text. The buddy that I know is interested isn’t a member here, others I think might be. So one way or another you might be getting a private message about it. Stu

Man I dig the HM conversions. Think the later 50s ones were done with a lot of snow removal ford trucks.

Interesting thread...I just acquired a 1942 Ford M-H that had the SnoGo. I'm still just learning about theme and what I've got myself into. Any advice and contacts to purchase parts is appreciated...

Welcome to the group. Chuck Mantiglia is the parts and tech information source. He’s the guru. Otherwise forum members are also resources. One of my text chain buddies rescued a 1948 big truck recently for parts. So good luck with your project. Stu
