stone or pumice gas filters If I remember correctly, sediment bowls used to have stone or pumice filters in them. These things were grey and had a hole down the center and filtered the gas when it came through the stone or pumice to get into the actual sediment bowl and into the gas line to the carb. They were very inexpensive, but also broke pretty easily.
Everyone that I’ve mentioned stone or pumice filters to has not heard of them used to filter gasoline. Water yes, but gas no. I even tried to look them up on Wikipedia without luck. Is it possible that I’m imagining these things or has everyone just had a brain fart and can’t remember them. I can remember the touch of them. They were smooth with a lot of tiny holes in them. They didn’t have a smell, and I never licked one so I don’t know what they tasted like. If this is the beginning of some kind of mental defect, let me know. Mike |
Re: stone or pumice gas filters No your not completely crazy - most 2 cycle small engines (chainsaws weed whackers etc) have a small grey filter and it could very well be pumice. Its just loose flopping in the tank with the fuel line attached to it to keep the fuel line in the gas. They are rather heavy and filter very well.
Now for a model A application... i dunno |
Re: stone or pumice gas filters No You ar not imagining things. I have a sediment bowl with a pumice filter in it, never used it though so don't know how well they work.

Re: stone or pumice gas filters Berts have a micro filter that fits in the tank shut off, A-9194-M, not sure what there made from , myself I use the screen filter in the tank and glass filter bowl, a very fine a filter is likely to plug up to quickly, (yes you are correct Bill, Chrysler did use them)

Re: stone or pumice gas filters Usually the filters were of ceramic materials and used in AC and other fuel filter bodies. Now they are replaced by paper pleated styles.

Re: stone or pumice gas filters Sintered Bronze is still used, kind of a similar deal. I remember being puzzled at Oilite bearings when I was a little kid. How could the oil get through metal to where it needed to go? When I found out it was like a sponge I couldn't believe it.

Looks like ceramic filters are on ebay. Fish stones are good for extending a diff breather into the engine bay so it doesn't suck water. |
Re: stone or pumice gas filters I haven't seen any pumice filters (lawnmowers and chainsaws) since the early 1970's. I don't ever remember seeing one for a car. Not a remarkable statement because I have not worked on cars as a professional, only a dozen or so vehicles outside of my own.

Re: stone or pumice gas filters I used to own a 1959 Evinrude 5 1/2 horse. It had a stone looking filter in glass sediment bowl.
