Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? Ford made two types of 12" X 5" on 5.5" lug pattern drums from 1940 thru 1948. The earlier drums were wide 5 pattern. The earlier ones of the two types had the hub mounted on the inside of the drum and the later ones had the hub on the outside of the drum. It certainly could be the inny type or perhaps an aftermarket replacement.
A photo may not tell the whole story. Measurements and characteristics say more than a photo. For example, I can't tell the drum braking surface diameter or the lug pattern size from the photo. An 11" braking surface drum would be later if the pattern is 5" on 5.5". |
Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? First, thanks to jseery for posting the pic for me
The BP is 5 on 5.5. I ran a tape on the other side w/o a hub that has the shoes on it, and appears it’s for a 12 inch hub. The shoes are 1 3/4 inches wide. Thanks. |

And again, I thank you for your help! |
Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? It's what I'd call a "40" hub. Drum fits over the hub. (Hub is on the inside).
Brakes are 12x1.75" Later had the hub on the outside but off the top of my head I'm not sure where the switch point is. As a point of interest, the hubs/drums as an assembly are interchangeable for any year 1939 to 1948 Mart. |

It looks like this 1940 Ford front drum.

Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? .
Your drum pictured below is what I believe to be an "aftermarket replacement" drum/hub assembly for 1940 and '41, like in 19Fordy's pictures above this post. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...1&d=1614191594 An original '40-'41 drum has these bumps or scallops like in the pic below. Thanks V8 for that tid bit of info.
I always thought the OEM brake drums were smooth like the ones that were on my 40 in 1963. Here is a photo of that same drum/hub assembly. Can you make out the part number. The Ford parts book shows Ford Part Number 01A-1105-A for 1940-41 Ford. Cost was $6.25 for "Hub-Front & Drum". Gee, that was a lot of money in 1940. The Hub-Rear & Drum shows Ford Part # 01A-1115-A and cost $7.50 in 1940. |

Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? V8: Thanks for the clarification. Your reply made sense to me.

Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? I appreciate all the replies, assuming an aftermarket assy, and trying to achieve symmetry, is my best bet for a 40-41 assy?

Re: What hub/drum assy do I have here? Thanks,
Issue I have is the other side is without the hub/drum assy, just a spindle and backing plate and brake hardware. I have an hydraulic braked axle out back, but hate to pull it apart as I can't get it in and out of the weather. SO looks like I'm in the hunt for a 40/41 hub/drum assy. Sure wish the swaps would open soon;) |
