Trying to identify this transmission, 3 speed, 4 speed, overdrive? It could possibly be out of a mustang 2. Wanting to put it behind a flathead if it has overdrive. Physically it appears smaller than a T170 which I thought would be nice.Attachment 355433

looks like an srod, (side rod overdrive ) I have considered using one myself but due to the shifter location prohibits me using one.

i think there is a jeep top shifter that goes on that trans. search the hamb

Yep, that's an SROD type with rear mounted rail type shift. The RTS is a Rail Turret Shift with the more top center location. The RUG is its side shift counter part. I think the SROD is more like the town and country type transmission with overdrive similar to RUG (or SMOD).

This has a ford emblem on it so must be ford not Jeep, but is it 3 speed with overdrive or what? Am putting it in an F1 and since the center floorboard is readily available, so didn’t think it was a big deal to cut a hole for the shifter and then later find a floorboard to put back to original. Thanks in advance for your input. Have a great Ford day! I am trying to attach another picture but can’t get it to upload. It is the one with the Ford emblem and some numbers.:(

The "OD" in SROD is for overdrive. Single Rail Over Drive. The coding from Tremec was T170FS. They were used in Mustangs and Capri cars from 79 to 83. They predate the RTS.

It’s not a heavy duty transmission for sure but behind a flathead motor it’s okay. The big issue is the odd gear ratio. First to second is quick and good but there’s a pretty wide ratio gap from second to third gear in these. Fourth gear is an overdrive gear. I have this same transmission in my 57 Ford with the 292 V8 engine. The only time I hate the gearing is when I have to go up a steep winding hill.....second gear seems too low and in third gear it’s lugging the engine. Aside from that, I like the transmission.....the overdrive gear is great on the highway. This is what I would call a light duty transmission. I’ve not been tempted to burn rubber and abuse it.

One other thing is the shifter design (which is built in to the transmission) is nothing like a good Hurst shifter. It’s design is naturally somewhat sloppy and NOT a shifter that would accommodate a fast shift.

If you remove the side rail unit, can a t176 shifter be mounted to the top of trans case?

I don't think the Jeep T176 was an overdrive type. The nature of the overdrive placement in the SROD and RTS T170 types and the reversed shifting apparatus on the 3rd/OD side makes it impractical to cross over into the straight 4-speed category. The cases are even different between the SROD and the RTS. The T176 is more like the older top loader 4-speeds only it has a truck like top center shift instead of a side shift like the old top loaders & SMOD version of the T170 plus it's set up for a transfer case that is characteristic of the Jeeps.

There are actually two versions of the SROD. Some have the shifter farther to the rear of the tail housing (Mustang style) and others are closer to the front case (pickups & vans).

I think that trick only works on a standard 4 speed toploader.
